Product Description

Product Description

Marvel once again poses the question, "What If...?" What if Annihilus had not been defeated in the outskirts of our galaxy, and instead had brought his devastating alien armada to Earth? What if Iron Man had lost the Civil War? What if the Hulk had landed on a peaceful planet, as the Marvel heroes had intended when they exiled him into space? Or Banner had landed on Sakaar instead of the Hulk? Or the Hulk's warrior bride, Caiera the Oldstrong, had come to Earth seeking vengeance instead of her husband? What if Vulcan had become Phoenix? And finally, what if Peter Parker had never come home years ago after following Wolverine to Russia and accidentally killing a friend? Collects What If? Annihilation, Civil War, Planet Hulk, X-Men, and Spider-Man vs. Wolverine

5.0 out of 5 stars A great comic collection, 28 Oct 2009
By Aaron Matthews - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I mostly got this book because of the first story in it, since my main interest is in the civil war right now. I don't understand why this is caled 'What If?: Civil War' since it is only a small part. The first story is the only one based on the Civil War, based around the Watcher diguised as a human talking to Tony Stark at the Captain America Memorial after the war has ended. He shows Stark two possible ways it could have gone, one good, one bad. It is a truly awesome story, really making you wish that the war had went along the 'good' line. I would reccommend this collection for this one story alone since it is so great in my opinion.

Though I'm not as interested in the other stories I plan to at least mention them, and since I mentioned my favourite first I might as well say my least favourite now. The story based on Caiera the Oldstrong living instead of the Hulk is poor in my opinion. She returns to earth with her warbound and in 4 pages had defeated all of earth and taken the Avengers as her slaves. Major characters like Iron Man, Sentry, Dr Strange and Mr Fantastic are killed instantly, no fight taking place. She easily defeats everyone, no one even coming close to touching her. I found this story disappointing since I was hoping for a grand fight but I guess since it was only a short story they didn't have time for that. In my opinion though if they didn't have the room to make it good, they shouldn't have done it.

The story on Annihilus is good with a great heroic scene at the end, but unfortunately I was never big on the Phoenix or Spiderman so the last two comics I didn't really pay attention too. I have to reccommend the X-Men 'What if?' simply because of the very crisp art style, I even found myself just looking at the art instead of reading the comic.

The final two hulk ones are a strange mixture, very unlike other hulk stories in my opinion though I haven't read THAT many. The one where bruce banner lands on Sakaar instead of the Hulk is a joke one, only a page long but it is worth a quick read. Despite how much I dislike the Hulk as a character the final story makes me like him, where instead of landing on the war-torn Sakaar, he lands on the peaceful planet he was aimed at. There is a little bit of fighting between him and Banner mostly because Banner kills one of the Hulk's favourite animals. The story is amazing, showing the peaceful side of the Hulk when he decides to protect these weak animals for large predators, the story ending with the creatures as Sentient and humanoid, evolved after a long period of time, thinking of the Hulk as a god for protecting them.

I originally had this marked down as a 4/5 because of how much I hated the Caiera story but after writing this review it makes me remember how much I loved two of the stories, the Hulk one and the Civil War one, easily outweighing my dislike of the other one. I recommend this to all marvel fans, and even to all comic fans. Awesome art, great characters and interesting views on what could happen in the marvel world in a tiny thing was changed.
