Product Description

Product Description
In hospital, Dr Sam Parnia faces life and death issues every day. Through his work in critical care, he became very interested in some of his work in critical care, he became very interested in some of his patients' accounts of the experiences that they had while clinically at the point of death. He started to collect these stories during his time at Southampton Hospital and read all the latest research on the subject. He then set about performing his own series of experiments, and his work has culminated in this extraordinary book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Mind-Body Problem?, 28 April 2009
By simdeva (Malvern, UK) - See all my reviews
This is not a woo-woo book, though it's conclusions may challenge you. Sam Parnia is heading up the AWARE programme, based at Southampton University researching into near death experiences (NDEs) to try to find evidence as to whether the mind can separate from the physical brain. It is 'layman technical', but enjoyably written. His interest in the title was there as a child, but his patient's experiences started him off collecting NDE accounts (he is a cardiologist), and his feet are very much on the ground. This book also contains a review of much of the past and current research into NDEs and mind/brain. If scientific research into these sorts of questions interests you - you should enjoy this book. Approach it with open minded scepticism though.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misnomer, 9 Mar 2009
By Robert Moore (Wakefield, UK) - See all my reviews

This book has the wrong title. Since Dr Parnia's work has reached no conclusion, it is at best premature. As a treatise on the difficulty of receiving funding for "off the wall" research the book has some value: but don't expect anything more than the usual litany of anecdotes on this topic.
