Product Description

Product Description

This is the introductory volume in an inspiring series of ebooks about green spirituality, a type of spirituality that fits into no particular category of religion or spiritual belief system and yet is fully compatible with - and draws millions of adherents from - almost all of them.

Green spirituality is based on a love of the Earth, the intrinsic value of all life forms, and a deep respect for the integrity of ecosystems and for the importance of biodiversity. It includes a belief in the total interconnectedness of the cosmos and offers a sense of identity rooted in being part of - and interdependent with - 'all that is.' It regards Nature as a great teacher and as a revelation of the divine and holds ideals of peace, social justice, ecological justice, low-impact living and sustainability

The book describes and illustrates, through the well-blended voices of thirteen writers, the basic concepts and expressions of this rapidly growing kind of spiritual attitude in today's world - what it is, where it comes from, who practises it and how and why. It covers a wide range of subject matter, from personal stories of spiritual awakening to scientific facts about the composition of soil and includes philosophical musings, practical suggestions, inspirational essays and poetry. It is edited, with commentaries, by Marian Van Eyk McCain, author of seven books who also edited the anthology GreenSpirit: Path to a New Consciousness (Earth Books, 2010) containing chapters by such well-known figures as theologian Matthew Fox, lawyer Cormac Cullinan, economist David Korten and Resurgence Magazine editor Satish Kumar.

As human beings, our spirituality - whether consciously acknowledged or not - helps to shape our attitude to life, and this attitude deeply affects our behaviour, both as individuals and as members of society. It is only when we approach problems with the right attitude that solutions start to appear.

The green spiritual attitude is the one that holds out to us the best hope of finding ways to solve our current planetary dilemmas and social and ecological crises, since it is the only one that can put us, perhaps for the first time in thousands of years, in complete harmony with the planet's ecosystems instead of in conflict with them.

Subsequent ebooks in this series deal with the application of these green spiritual ideas to various aspects of our lives and society such as education, politics, economics, psychology, law, food and farming, travel, lifestyle, art & culture, social welfare, health and healing, crafts and music, science and technology, ecology, religion, celebration and ceremony.

More About the Author

Born in England in 1936, Marian spent many years of her life living in other places. She brought up her children in Australia and later went to California to pursue graduate studies. In 1996, she retired from her professional career as a psychotherapist and workshop leader in order to concentrate on her writing. And in 1998 she returned to her native England. As a free-lance writer, Marian has publishing credits in many subjects, from mind/body/spirit and women's issues to environmental politics, organic growing and alternative technology.

Marian's first non-fiction book was "Transformation through Menopause" (Bergin & Garvey,1991). This was the first self-help guide to the psychological, emotional and spiritual aspects of menopause and is still claimed by many to be the best book on menopause ever written. Her second book "ELDERWOMAN: reap the wisdom, feel the power, embrace the joy" (Findhorn Press, 2002) follows on from that. It is a comprehensive guide to the crowning/croning phase of women's lives, the years from menopause onwards.

With a passionate interest--and considerable personal experience--in simplicity and sustainable living, Marian published "The Lilypad List: Seven steps to the simple life" (also through Findhorn Press) in 2004. In 2009 she published (through Booklocker) her first novel "The Bird Menders," which is now also available in a Kindle edition as well as in paperback. In 2010 she edited the definitive book on green spirituality "GreenSpirit: Path to a New Consciousness"(O Books). Following that, she authored two books in the 'Made Easy' series for John Hunt Publishing. The first of these was another book on the theme of living simply entitled "Downshifting Made Easy: how to plan for your planet-friendly future." The second, which drew on the experience and expertise of Marian's years as a psychotherapist, is a self-help book called "Self-Therapy Made Easy" (Psyche Books, 2012)

Marian is currently co-ordinating the production of a new ebook series for the GreenSpirit organization. The first title in this series - "What is Green Spirituality" -is now available on Kindle and there will be others following soon.

Marian has also contributed to several anthologies, including both the Chicken Soup and Cup of Comfort series.

One of her short stories ("Waiting a While for Greeneyes") was published as a Leaf mini-book and she self-published a short story collection through Lulu.com in 2006 under the title "Apricot Harvest."

She is also a book reviewer and for several years wrote the "Books in Brief" section of Resurgence magazine. She is co-editor of the "GreenSpirit Journal" and a columnist for Crone magazine, in the USA. She edits the quarterly "Elderwoman Newsletter" e-zine and has created (and maintains) several websites, an online social network for 'elderwomen' and also a blog.

Great integral and poetic look at green spirituality, which crosses many religions and nonreligious folks. Gentle and easy to read but deals with an important subject.
