Like 1999's "Portrait", "What Goes Around" is slightly more mainstream than their ethereal 1997 debut "Moonchild" but it gets off to a flying start with the solid, eastern-influenced title track and from then on the quality and variety never let up. All the Celtus hallmarks are there. Beautifully crafted songs with choruses that will not leave you alone for days afterwards, musicianship of the very highest order and vocal harmonies that would leave The Eagles gobsmacked.
Nowadays, anything based around good songs and musicianship is regarded by some as from a bygone age but on this album there is no doubt that the keyboards and programming skills of Dan Axtell certainly bring the Celtus sound bang up to date and lay a perfect foundation for the voices, guitar, fiddle and whistle wizardry of the McManus brothers to form a unique blend. The first Technocelts!
Singling out the high points is a difficult task indeed. The album is so diverse, there is so much to choose from and it really depends on what mood you're in - from the melancholy of "Angel", the sheer instrumental fun of "Jigsaw", the brooding, pent-up power of "Shelter" or the gentle caress of "Perfection". And then there's the potential club hit "Liberate" or the classic pop/rock of "Changes", What Goes Around", "Hole Inside My Heart" and "Breathe". Where do you stop? - it seems so unfair to leave out the other three tracks. So I won't - they are the jazz-tinged "Touch Too Much", the jig/fiddle driven "Live Again" and finally the soothing piano and whistle instrumental "Departure".
Despite its diversity and unconventional but seamless blend of traditional and modern influences, the ability to touch hearts and the sheer quality of the songwriting on this album must surely make it radio friendly from start to finish and once radio stations and djs have cottoned on to what some of us already know, the Celtus star will continue to rise and hopefully respectable sales should be guaranteed. They certainly deserve it.
"What Goes Around" deserves 10/10 but I will only give it 9/10. Why? Simple - the way these guys are going from strength to strength, there is every possibility that their next album could be even better and where would there be to go? I don't expect to buy a better album this year - and it's only March.
John and Pat are excellent Singer/Songwriters and Musicians, and it shows, cos when you hear Celtus you'll only wish, like me , that you'd not had the pleasure of there great music before....Buy "What Goes Around" ... you wont be disapointed!

So I rescind many of my earlier comments. Whilst harbouring fond memories of earlier tracks, I'm left in no doubt that Celtus have delivered a sound on WGA which possesses all of the unique magic, yet in a package which is definitely 21st century and certain to project them to a wider audience and even greater success.
