5.0 out of 5 stars A unique blend of traditional and modern sounds, 27 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: What Goes Around... (Audio CD)
When I noticed that the new Celtus album "What Goes Around" was self-produced, past experiences with similar offerings from other acts immediately put me on my guard especially after the excellent work of Rupert Hine and Matthew Vaughan on the brilliant "Moonchild" and "Portrait" albums. I am very pleased to report, however, that John & Pat McManus were clearly paying attention during the years spent recording all the Mama's Boys stuff and are not only extremely skilled musicians and songwriters but nowadays also proficient producers by any standards.

Like 1999's "Portrait", "What Goes Around" is slightly more mainstream than their ethereal 1997 debut "Moonchild" but it gets off to a flying start with the solid, eastern-influenced title track and from then on the quality and variety never let up. All the Celtus hallmarks are there. Beautifully crafted songs with choruses that will not leave you alone for days afterwards, musicianship of the very highest order and vocal harmonies that would leave The Eagles gobsmacked.

Nowadays, anything based around good songs and musicianship is regarded by some as from a bygone age but on this album there is no doubt that the keyboards and programming skills of Dan Axtell certainly bring the Celtus sound bang up to date and lay a perfect foundation for the voices, guitar, fiddle and whistle wizardry of the McManus brothers to form a unique blend. The first Technocelts!

Singling out the high points is a difficult task indeed. The album is so diverse, there is so much to choose from and it really depends on what mood you're in - from the melancholy of "Angel", the sheer instrumental fun of "Jigsaw", the brooding, pent-up power of "Shelter" or the gentle caress of "Perfection". And then there's the potential club hit "Liberate" or the classic pop/rock of "Changes", What Goes Around", "Hole Inside My Heart" and "Breathe". Where do you stop? - it seems so unfair to leave out the other three tracks. So I won't - they are the jazz-tinged "Touch Too Much", the jig/fiddle driven "Live Again" and finally the soothing piano and whistle instrumental "Departure".

Despite its diversity and unconventional but seamless blend of traditional and modern influences, the ability to touch hearts and the sheer quality of the songwriting on this album must surely make it radio friendly from start to finish and once radio stations and djs have cottoned on to what some of us already know, the Celtus star will continue to rise and hopefully respectable sales should be guaranteed. They certainly deserve it.

"What Goes Around" deserves 10/10 but I will only give it 9/10. Why? Simple - the way these guys are going from strength to strength, there is every possibility that their next album could be even better and where would there be to go? I don't expect to buy a better album this year - and it's only March.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only music you'll ever need, 13 Dec 2001

Which ever Celtus CD your thinking of purchasing, then you wont be disapointed when you hear the fantastic sounds of Celtus, with Dan Axtell at the Keyboards John McManus on Whistles, Uilleann Pipes, Bodhran and the Bass and Pat McManus playing Guitar, Bouzouki, Fiddle and BV's.
Celtus have an original sound that is pure pleasure to the ears, with there blend of traditional Irish and more modern sounds with the fantastic programming from Dan on Keyboards.

John and Pat are excellent Singer/Songwriters and Musicians, and it shows, cos when you hear Celtus you'll only wish, like me , that you'd not had the pleasure of there great music before....Buy "What Goes Around" ... you wont be disapointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps I was too hasty - this one's a grower......, 20 Mar 2001
This review is from: What Goes Around... (Audio CD)
It's amazing what repeated listening can do to endear a record to one. What Goes Around is a case in point; some three weeks on since my first, perhaps slightly reactive review, there's been time for two things to happen. Firstly, I've had time to listen repeatedly to the new offering and, as I suspected, it's repaid that commitment, with many of the tracks only revealing their true addictive quality after a few outings. Secondly, I saw the band deliver one of their outstanding live performances.. during which they played four or five tracks from this album. There's something about a live performance, particularly when it's as faithful to the originals as in this case, which helps you hear the wider appeal of tracks and this was no exception.

So I rescind many of my earlier comments. Whilst harbouring fond memories of earlier tracks, I'm left in no doubt that Celtus have delivered a sound on WGA which possesses all of the unique magic, yet in a package which is definitely 21st century and certain to project them to a wider audience and even greater success.
