Product Description

Synopsis

Dogs have a direct line to the hearts of most animal lovers. Those doleful eyes, that winning expression, that wagging tail - it's all too easy to fall under the spell of a canine charmer and to let cool reason fly out of the window when faced with a creature that pushes all your emotional buttons. But, in the familiar phrase, let the buyer beware! It's not good falling for a dog, and then discovering a few weeks later that you hadn't bargained for the fact that it needs grooming for an hour every day, or imagining that a leisurely walk to the end of the road and back will satisfy the exercise demands of a dog that can run for hours. What prospective owners of a new dog really need is an honest and in-depth portrait of the breed that highlights all its positive characteristics, but which also points out potential shortcomings or behavioural aspects of the breed that may come into conflict with their own chosen lifestyle. "What Dog?" is precisely that - a guide to the hundred most popular breeds of dog that highlights their individual characters and which provides welcome advice on how well they fit into a home, how much exercise they need, how much grooming, how amenable they are to training, etc., etc.

Each breed is beautifully illustrated, both adult dogs and puppies being pictured, while a colour bar-chart provides at-a-glance visual reference about seven of the most important character traits.

From the Inside Flap

Armed with a copy of What Dog?, prospective dog owners truly have the essential buyer's guide in their hands. Here in one compact compendium is the key information needed to make an informed decision about choosing the right breed of dog for all sorts of lifestyle. Whether you are young or old, fit or infirm, a city-dweller in a tower block or the owner of rolling acres, there is a dog out there that will suit you well. The key to making the right decision is sound advice, and that is exactly what this attractive book provides. It features clear and honest descriptions of the personalities of 100 popular breeds, and reveals how compatible they are with people and other pets, their requirements in terms of grooming and exercise, and how easy they are to train.

5.0 out of 5 stars a good compact guide, 22 Jun 2011
This review is from: What Dog? (Paperback)
i first saw this book on the shelves of my local public library, and thought that it was superior to other similar dog books. A year or so later, I thought I would like to own a copy. The price was good, and I bought the book through Amazon.

May I also compare this book with a book I bought as a teenager in the 1960s? This old book is still available second hand through Amazon and other booksellers. It shows the longevity of that book. I still have my copy, it is a good book. It is by Erich Schneider-Leyer, and it is called The Young Specialist Looks At Dogs. It cost 7/6 , or 37½ p in modern decimal money.

Schneider-Leyer's book has black and white photos. Amanda O'Neil's book has colour photos and more than one photo of each breed. O'Neil's book also gives a detailed guide for would-be owners to assess each breed as a possible family pet.

O'Neil has a total of 100 breeds. Schneider-Leyer has about 112 breeds. Both books are compact guides. They don't have absolutely every breed. What book does? Some well-known breeds which are not in O'Neil's book are the Fox Terrier, the Welsh Springer Spaniel, plus some other terriers and spaniels, perhaps not so well-known. However Schneider-Leyer does not have several breeds included by O'Neil such as Dogue de Bordeaux, Australian Sheepdog, Italian Spinone. Neither book includes the Leonberger.

However most breeds that you are likely to encounter are in here. The strength of O'Neil's book is the guide to would-be owners. Let me give you an example. As a teenager, i saw the breed the Husky, in S-L's book as an ideal breed, an uncomplicated, healthy dog, no problems with grooming the dog's coat. Nowadays, forty years later many people have decided to have huskies as pets. They should think again. The dog's coat, well it moults, a slight inconvenience However, the main drawback of this breed is that it needs more exercise than a normal human-being can give. Furthermore, it is not a dog that is easily trained. Therefore it needs to be kept on a lead. You must have seen huskies pulling their owners on the lead.

All this can be avoided if you read Amand O'Neil's book. She states clearly 'An adult husky needs 6-7 km, 4 miles brisk walk every day at the minimum, with no maximum. It is impossible to tire him out.'

Let me recommend O'Neil's book. It enables you to see a variety of dog breeds, and to go into some depth as to what they would be like if you owned the breed.
