a good compact guide,
This review is from: What Dog? (Paperback)
i first saw this book on the shelves of my local public library, and thought that it was superior to other similar dog books. A year or so later, I thought I would like to own a copy. The price was good, and I bought the book through Amazon.
May I also compare this book with a book I bought as a teenager in the 1960s? This old book is still available second hand through Amazon and other booksellers. It shows the longevity of that book. I still have my copy, it is a good book. It is by Erich Schneider-Leyer, and it is called The Young Specialist Looks At Dogs. It cost 7/6 , or 37½ p in modern decimal money. Schneider-Leyer's book has black and white photos. Amanda O'Neil's book has colour photos and more than one photo of each breed. O'Neil's book also gives a detailed guide for would-be owners to assess each breed as a possible family pet. O'Neil has a total of 100 breeds. Schneider-Leyer has about 112 breeds. Both books are compact guides. They don't have absolutely every breed. What book does? Some well-known breeds which are not in O'Neil's book are the Fox Terrier, the Welsh Springer Spaniel, plus some other terriers and spaniels, perhaps not so well-known. However Schneider-Leyer does not have several breeds included by O'Neil such as Dogue de Bordeaux, Australian Sheepdog, Italian Spinone. Neither book includes the Leonberger. However most breeds that you are likely to encounter are in here. The strength of O'Neil's book is the guide to would-be owners. Let me give you an example. As a teenager, i saw the breed the Husky, in S-L's book as an ideal breed, an uncomplicated, healthy dog, no problems with grooming the dog's coat. Nowadays, forty years later many people have decided to have huskies as pets. They should think again. The dog's coat, well it moults, a slight inconvenience However, the main drawback of this breed is that it needs more exercise than a normal human-being can give. Furthermore, it is not a dog that is easily trained. Therefore it needs to be kept on a lead. You must have seen huskies pulling their owners on the lead. All this can be avoided if you read Amand O'Neil's book. She states clearly 'An adult husky needs 6-7 km, 4 miles brisk walk every day at the minimum, with no maximum. It is impossible to tire him out.' Let me recommend O'Neil's book. It enables you to see a variety of dog breeds, and to go into some depth as to what they would be like if you owned the breed.
