A slow burning crime drama but by no means a bad one. This is a good film, but whats makes it different from other similar movies it's it's no fuss straight to the poin,t with all the main characters putting in top performances. You would pay more for a standard z grade normal dvd than i did for this blu-ray so i wouldn't have complained if it was rubbish but the fact this film is solid makes it a great purchase at a silly price - 3.5/5

The synopsis of this film really turned me off as it read like a "seen it all and heard it all" before type tale. Based in South Boston, we meet Brian and Paulie played by Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke. They are from the wrong side of the tracks and after a life of crime and being busted Paulie thinks that one more heist might be his way out of the ghetto. So sounds a bit like déjà vu? Well I was completely wrong.

These guys and their extended friends and families come across as completely believable and what is more important is that these are not the Mr Big gangsters. They are really the foot soldiers for the higher ups and only get the crumbs from the table. They see the greed of those who they work for whilst they struggle to meet bills etc. Ok so perhaps they should just get a job or have studied harder at school. Well we don't all get the same chance in life and so walk a mile in their shoes etc before being the first to cast a stone (sorry mixed metaphors there).

This is all done in such a way that you end up caring for all the players and I was hooked until the end. This is based on true stories of the men involved and makes it more poignant for it. There are scenes of violence, drug taking and the usual language that you would expect from hoodlums. Great performances all round and once you get past the worry of lack of originality you will find a rather good film waiting to get out.

An unexpected pleasure. I thought it would be a straight-forward good/bad tale. It's not.
Great acting by Ethan Hawke and Mark Ruffalo

This has been lingering around for years and only just out on DVD i was expecting something dire but it was an ok watch. Hawke is really electric and on edge throughout and his scenes with Ruffalo are really good. Nothing new but well acted and a true story. 2 Brothers and their life of crime, one goes one way the other the other.

There is nothing new in this story that we have seen a hundred times before.
Even the touted "true story", does not make it new or different or exciting in any way.
In spite of good acting efforts by Ethan H. and Amanda P. in particular, the story is not engaging, and moves slowly to its obvious and inevitable conclusion.
