5.0 out of 5 stars No false promises here !, 10 Dec 2002
By A Customer
While most AD(H)D books mention social skills deficit as a problem related to AD(H)D, they rarely provide any concrete help.

This books not only manages to elate the specific behavioral "patterns" typical for a person with AD(H)D, but also provides practical and usable (!) "how to" advice.

Read it, apply it, you won't regret !

3.0 out of 5 stars Some useful ideas but hard to read, 23 April 2009
By C. Jones - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was recommended to me, and it has some useful ideas. It is about 300 pages long, includes a table of contents, an index, and chapter summaries. The social skills advice includes some very useful information which many readers might well value, for instance on giving and receiving gifts and compliments.

The text is somewhat hard to follow, as it is inconsistent in the "tone of voice", in the level of information, and in the subject matter. Most of the book is written in an informal style, addressing the reader directly, eg "What's wrong with having a messy home?" At times it seems overpersonal, particularly in that the author uses many examples of her own son's behaviour. Then in other places, the author writes in a neutral style using technical jargon eg "Verbal encouragers are especially important in phone conversations". It feels inconsistent, which is distracting.

Much of the information is practical advice on social skills, eg "Don't leave your guests while you finish writing bills or folding laundry". The author deals with some of the situations that make it hard to follow the basic rules of behaviour. However, in places the information becomes more theoretical, eg references to "attribution theory" which seems like something for professionals to discuss amongst themselves. There is a whole chapter on getting general help with AD/HD. Some readers might find that useful, others might have preferred to get more detail on social skills.

The aim of the book is good, and I have not been able to find anything else with the same objectives. All other social skills books seem to be written for parents or professionals. This book is written for adults to read for themselves. In that respect, it is very valuable.
