This is a brilliant book, consistently inventive and funny. The premise is a "What if...?" approach to football history, showing that the ripples from the beautiful game's crucial turning points can spread out into all walks of life. The sequence showing that the dodgy bottle of Mexican beer which ruled Gordon Banks out of the World Cup quarter final in Leon in 1970 led directly to Thatcherism is particularly pleasing and flawlessly argued. There are some great pictures with hilarious captions, and a great 1966 conspiracy theory short story by Chris "Bostock's Cup" England which is absolutely begging to be made into a film. I bought this book as a gift for a football fanatic, started flicking through it, and decided to keep it. Excellent.
