Product Description

Review

Mark Howell has spent time with the people he presents through his work, grown close to them and listened to their stories. He has witnessed the simple exhaustion and weariness of those who never know whether they will make it to work that day, of the ambulance drivers forced to take indirect routes to an emergency because they cannot use Israeli-only roads, the shopkeepers forced to move out of their premises because the Israeli settlers living above throw rubbish down upon them and the man whose wife is forced to live illegally with him because she isn t given an ID card and who, once the Wall is completed, may never be able to see her family again. It is exactly this exhaustion, this quiet desperation and frustration that Howell captures so well. --Emel Magazine

As an introductory view of the Palestinian situation, What Did We Do to Deserve This? is an excellent starting point. Hard-hitting, gritty, realistic, yet also compassionate and humanistic and ultimately, in spite of the negatives, hopeful. The hope is narrowing, the love of family, land, and culture remains. --PalestineChronicle.com

Product Description

This book gives an up-to-date account of the life of Palestinians in the West Bank in its fortieth year of occupation by Israel. Based around photographs of, and interviews with, ordinary Palestinian people, it looks at all aspects of daily life ranging from restrictions on movement and imprisonment to the effects of the occupation on business, the practising of religion and the development of democracy. Finding a solution to what is frequently termed the "Israeli-Palestinian conflict" is now widely acknowledged as an important step in reversing the growing gap between main stream Muslim society and the West. By providing the reader with a comprehensive understanding of how Israel's policies in the West Bank affect the lives of real people on the ground, it cuts through the smokescreens and political correctness that pervades coverage of the issue and offers the reader a new platform from which to form his or her own opinions.

Anyone wanting to understand exactly why "The West" is viewed with such dislike by so many people in the Arab world would do very well to read Mark Howell's book. "What Did We Do to Deserve This" uses beautiful photographs and very revealing interviews with ordinary people to show how the Israeli occupation is ruining the lives of Palestinians across the West Bank.

The people in this book are not "terrorists", "extremists" or "fundamentalists", but are ordinary, everyday people just like you and me - people with kids and grandparents, rent to pay, lives to live.

No doubt some will dismiss it as "anti-Israeli", but of course there are two sides to every story. You want to build a giant security barrier? Fine, then build it on the border. You want to use checkpoints to guarantee Israeli security? Fair enough, but don't put them between neigbbouring Palestinian towns and villages, preventing pregnant women from getting to hospitals, people from going to work, and kids from going to school. And above all, don't continue to claim the world that you are "the victim", while all the while continuing to seize ever more Palestinian land, making a viable peace agreement ever more unlikely.

This book is eye opening, depressing - and highly recommended!

Answer to the author's question 27 Oct 2008
By A. Field - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Mark Howell asks what have the Palestinians done to deserve their fate. Surely, the answer is extremely obvious: refusal to accept Israel's right to exist in ANY borders; countless terrorist attacks and suicide bombings that have claimed thousands of Israeli lives; committment to violence and Israel's destruction; refusing peace when offered (Camp David, 2000).

And when Israel withdraws from land under occupation (e.g. Gaza in July 2005), the Qassam rockets immediately come flying over the border on a near daily basis. Does one really need to be a rocket scientist to work out what would happen if Israel withdrew from the West Bank, and therefore, why Israel doesn't withdraw?

Don't get me wrong, Israel may be far from perfect. But the Palestinians have done a great deal to bring their fate on themselves.
