Product Description

Review

''Claringbull is a skilled story-teller, and the narrative he unfolds in this text is nothing less than the evolution of the talking therapies from the ancient world to the current day. The result is a remarkably engaging and accessible resource which will help equip both trainees and seasoned practitioners to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century from an informed and considered position.'' (Professor Simon du Plock, Metanoia Institute and Middlesex University)

Product Description

Written specifically for students on counselling and psychotherapy courses, this book gives an overview of the profession from its early beginnings in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis through the development of the different schools and approaches of talking therapies including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and person-centred approaches. Working within various sectors, such as the commercial, educational and public, is also considered and discussed. The author concludes the book by looking at where counselling and psychotherapy is heading in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aimiable, engaging, enlightening and totally accessible - you will not fall asleep, 29 Jan 2010
A long time ago when I trained as a Counselling Practitioner a wise old supervisor told me that if I ever wanted to fall asleep or was struggling to sleep to just pick up a Counselling Text. Admittedly some do induce sleep after 10 mins (or less) which I guess is the norm but not this book. I have to say the writing style is page turning rather than yawn inducing.
Claringbull cleverly manages to entice yet challenge - some great points for reflection and doesn't take an, 'I know it all stance' like many of the academic ego brigade - he informs artfully yet there is a comical - lets not take this too seriously approach that actually invites that considered thought.
I found the book to be right up to date and on the money with so many Counselling related issues that I feel we have a new counsellor's champion in our midst (write more please Mr Claringbull). I particularly like the structure of the book and the easy to grasp way he has broken so much information down. That is not saying he has made Counselling child's play but just cut away so much of the unnecessary waffle that many of us cringe at paying way too much for.
Roll on the next book, great work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Jargon-free Introductory Text, 15 Jan 2010
A charming, eloquent and beautifully presented text that accounts for students transitioning between introductory to mainstream counselling skills and diploma courses. The text offers an interesting and refreshing balance between classical theoretical approaches in key psychological research and their application to understanding the human being who presents as a client. The text is well laid out and takes the reader on a journey with a rich and exciting itinerary that includes travelling from historical antecedents of our curiosity and misapprehension about mental illness in prehistoric times to the turbulent white waters of cutting-edge research in current counselling theory and application. Claringbull has a relaxed and engaging style of writing that makes 'What is Counselling and Psychotherapy' easily accessible to newcomers and practitioners alike. Clear fresh diagrams are used liberally throughout the text to present complicated relationships between ideas in a friendly and useful manner. The text encourages readers to think and contemplate topics liberally supported with case study vignettes and activities followed by reflection points. Each chapter follows the same blueprint that enables the reader to appraise themselves of the overview of the key concepts at the beginning, followed by relevant, jargon-free information incorporating the above facets and ending with reflection points and suggested further reading with reviewed texts. Part 3 is specifically important in exploring where therapists work and is supported by detailed case studies that give an in depth overview of the application of counselling skills and practice in the industry. This is a necessary and important addition to such a key subject matter. I have no hesitation in heartily recommending this text to students (and anyone interested in the subject) on all counselling courses; practicing therapists and counsellors will also find the text of use. It will be a pleasure to adopt Claringbull's valuable contribution as a definite text for my students and as a reference to some clients who may be benefit from greater insight. B. Raithatha, Counselling Psychologist and Lecturer.
