Jane Hornby is an experienced food writer and cook, specializing in developing recipes for beginners. After training as a chef, she worked as cookery writer and food editor on the BBC’s bestselling Good Food magazine for five years. Amazing. My son (19) has just gone off to live away from home. As a parting shot at parenting, I gave him this book to make up for the fact that I rather failed in 'teaching him to cook' department . He is neither a reader nor a cook - and now he is both. His comment on his first meal was "well whats all the cooking fuss about - that was pretty straightforward". He found the layout and recipes easy to navigate and understand. For instance why should he know what "sautee some onions" means? But the book explains all the terms in a neat glossary at the back. Reportedly the meal was delicious and he's just carried on and really enjoys his new found 'talent'! So congratulations Jane and a huge thank you. I will now give this book to everyone I know who needs a bit of hand holding in the kitchen department.

My dad got this book for Christmas and I really love it! The title should be "Cookbook for men", because it assumes you know nothing about cooking. Since my mother died last year we've been struggling to cook and all the cookbooks we have are really complicated, hard to follow and assume you have a degree in cooking. But this book is fool proof. I haven't done a single thing wrong so far.

The layout is perfect. It's step-by-step and all the key steps have pictures of what it should look like, including pictures of what all the ingredients should look like. But the best thing is that it has smart tips, for example, how to fold. No one tells you these things otherwise!

This isn't just a cookbook of fancy things that take 3 attempts to get right, although some dishes do look very tasty. It also has things like how to cook fish and steak; real basic stuff, because (again) no one tells you these things otherwise. I think I even saw how to cook scrambled egg!

So far I've cooked a very yummy stew and very very yummy brownies. I liked the bit in the brownies recipe where it says "cut with a large knife". Saved me washing a spoon.

This is definitely the kind of book I wish someone had bought me years
ago. It's a colourful, simple introduction to healthy cooking, and the
results are yum. There's a nice useful introduction at the front of the
book, for non-literate gastro-pub consumers like me. There's also a useful
glossary and index in the back.

The recipes are step by step, which is really easy to follow, and there
are little advice boxes full of helpful tips as go you along. The recipes
are fundamental, ranging from a full English breakfast to Prawn Pad Thai,
and offer a good foundation to cooking.

What makes this book particularly good is that the writer breaks the meals
into categories such as food for sharing, weekend cooking, and at the back
of the book gives some advice towards planning a menu. The desserts
section is fantastic and the Butterscotch and Banana Bread was the
ultimate winner in my book.

In summary: it's a really practical, good buy for someone who wants to
learn a wide variety of healthy meals.

Jane Hornby is a trained chef and has spent many years working for the BBC Good Food Magazine and has edited several of the Good Food series of 101 recipe books. Published by Phaidon this book is beautifully laid out and perfectly photographed. Every step of every recipe is clearly photographed, from a line up of ingredients (which makes a long list look far less daunting) to how to chop and prep to the finished dish. It is the visual equivalent of having Jane at your side in the kitchen. Coupled with the ultra clear and well written directions I believe that anyone provided with an equipped kitchen could cook anything from this book.

All the recipes can easily be created from ingredients exclusively bought from the supermarket. For the novice cook there is a handy shopping guide, glossary and preparation photos.

There are 100 recipes in the book, divided into sections to cover all eventualities including Breakfast and Brunch, Light Lunches, Simple Suppers to Desserts and Baking. Recipes cover British classics such as a full English breakfast, simple soups, sausages & mash, all manner of roasts, to apple crumble & custard. Also included are lots international dishes such as Pad Thai, Mediterranean fish stew and key lime pie, and of course the carbonara recipe! I think that the book covers the vast majority of dishes that people in Britain would name as their favourites.

I am thrilled to have a copy on my cookbook shelves, and I think that due to the outstanding photography and unambiguous instructions it is also a perfect present for any novice or unconfident cook (how many other cookbooks actually clearly explain how to separate an egg for example?) I am already looking forward to Jane's next book.

I have followed Jane's recipes over the years with BBC Good Food magazine and the BBC 101 recipe books and this is a real triumph for her first full book. It is beautifully set out with step by step instructions and full colour pictures making each recipe easy to follow and would make a great present for any home cook, not just someone new to cooking. The flavours really come through in each dish - the chilli con carne is amazing! Best I have ever made. Not the really hot chilli that some like, but definitely the tastiest combination of spices for a real depth of flavour. We also enjoyed the beef with herb dumplings. Just what is needed for this cold weather.
