5.0 out of 5 stars The Guru of Jobhunting, 31 Oct 2003
This review is from: What Color is Your Parachute? 2004: A Practical Guide for Job-Hunting and Career Changes (Paperback)
Its simple and sypathetic to those who really don't know what to do in their career. But it's also useful for those who have a direction and a plan. Richard writes with humour and candour to show that all is not lost and you can get the job you want. A series of uncomplicated exercises will reveal your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. This gives you a basis for moving on to choose sectors where you might like to work. It's a gradual process and the book reccommends innovative and different ways to find jobs that satisfy and can be excelled in. He adds a spiritual touch and is clearly the expert in his field. It's a great book. He's a great author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Limited use - but excellent for that, 31 Aug 2004
By
This review is from: What Color is Your Parachute? 2004: A Practical Guide for Job-Hunting and Career Changes (Paperback)
I did not like the job hunting material in Parachute, but the Flower exercise in the appendix is the best of its kind that I have seen.

The advice Mr Bolles offers on CV writing and on conducting (and selling!) oneself in the interview is very limited and directed far too much to the American market. He almost seems to expect one to have that sort of insight already, probably stemming from the fact that he has been writing on this subject for over 30 years. He is just too far removed from the reality of someone who needs help on writing a selling CV and getting ready for a searching interview. Also, I did not enjoy the religious overtones.

That being said, if you are unsure of your next move or of your long term plan, this is a great book and worth the cover price just for the material in the appendix. Lots of good ideas here, but look elsewhere for job hunting advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific read, there's hope for everybody..., 18 Feb 2004

This review is from: What Color is Your Parachute? 2004: A Practical Guide for Job-Hunting and Career Changes (Paperback)
Dick Bolles is a job-hunter's god. He explains all sorts of unconventional methods for jobhunters and also examines common pitfalls that seem so obvious, yet we ignore them. He understands that people have different needs- some people want to make a potentially lifechanging jobhunt, thers are looking for positions similar to old ones, etc. Bolles shows his experience in the anecdotes he tells. Inspirational stuff. The man is a legend.
