5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully designed first book for any child 13 Dec 2001
Format:Board book
This is a beautiful book in all respects. The pictures are gorgeous and, for a book dramatizing the extremes of black and white, richly varied in both colour and detail.
In all there are seven images, the first six alternating images of black or white, with the final surprise combining both colours and making a pleasing coda; but this description does little for the book's charm.
It was one of the first books we read with our son. It is wonderfully designed for small hands as the pages reduce in size and are therefore easier to turn over. The board book format also renders them resistant to chewing and other hazards.
This is a deceptively perfect book. The pictures are a delight, a mixture of crayon and paint, and the lettering is just as pleasing.
This is one of the best books for very young children we have ever come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Concept! 23 Oct 2002
Format:Board book
Being an art person, I find that there are tonnes of books on all the colours of the rainbow. Black and white are just as important to recognize as all of the other colours. It is refreshing to find a book with such a simple concept that is so well thought out - making it all the more impressive! The clever layout of the pages and the wonderful illustrations made this a must have, along with all of this authors other books, in our library and at our playgroup!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun way to learn what's black and white 22 Sep 2011
By Nicola Hardy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
In this lovely little board book, Petr Horacek shows us seven things that are black or white, and one that is black and white! In addition to the gorgeous illustrations, the pages are cut in an inventive way that leads to a nice surprise at the end. The quality of the board is good and has withstood the attentions of my one-year-old for over six months now. The book makes a great companion for Strawberries Are Red (Look Inside) for introducing colours to pre-schoolers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book 2 April 2011
Format:Board book
This is a wonderful, simple, engaging book that all three of my children (now 6 months, 3 and 10) have enjoyed looking at. The illustrations are simple and the children love the way the size of the pages reduces to reveal what is black and white! Can't recommend highly enough.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as others in this series. 24 Jun 2011
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
This isn't as good as others in this series though I like the way the last pages make a zebra (in the same way the this little cat one makes a tiger). It's mostly due to the fact they have a white bird and a black bird (they might call them crow and seagull or something along those lines - don't have the book by me this second!) but it's just confusing and they could have chosen things that weren't essentially the same animal. Also the cover just makes me want to say 'and read all over' in a joke starting kind of way... *sigh*. Get the little cat, little bird or train one instead, much better!
