Product Description

The Observer Music Monthly, (Neil Spencer), December 2006

(4 stars) TV composer rounds up unusual suspects for a left-field delight.

Album Description

What...is in Between? is the long-awaited follow-up to David Lowe's first album, Dreamcatcher (1997). It is also the latest release from Charlie Gillett's enterprising Oval Music label.

In 1998, David Lowe wrote and produced `Would You...?' by Touch and Go, whose catchy trumpet hook and mischievous punch line (`would you...go to bed with me?') carried it high in the charts throughout Europe and led to countless uses in films, trailers and TV ads worldwide. He is among the UK's leading television composers, with the BBC-TV News theme the biggest notch on his belt.

On What...is in Between? David worked with a wide range of musicians: Mieko Shimizu is David's collaborator on this album, as co-writer of half the songs and vocalist on all but one of the them, singing in English, Japanese and even Spanish on `Passion of the Dance'. In another life and under another name, Mieko is an avant-garde DJ, and there is a glimpse of that character in `Send Them' and 'Visualise'. Benjamin Zephaniah, the poet and novelist, is vocalist on four titles, of which he contributed the words of the witty `Sadhu'. Guy Barker, the award-winning jazz trumpeter, plays on `Still the Greatest'. Jim Lynch, trumpeter on Touch and Go's `Would You...?'and trombonist Annie Whitehead are also featured.

What...is in Between? defies categorization. World, electronica, dance, indie rock, there is something of all of these in this endlessly surprising album.

Personnel: David Lowe - Keyboards, Programming, Vocals (7), Mieko Shimizu - Vocals (all except 7), Keys & Programming, Nuwella - Vocals (7), Benjamin Zephaniah - Vocals (3,5,12,13), Roger McGough - Vocals (9), James Hesford (Cellorhythmics) - Cello (13), Tigran Aleksanyan - Duduk (9,10), Vo Fletcher - Guitar, Steve Mellor - Sax, Clarinet (2,8), Annie Whitehead - Trombone (3), Guy Barker - Trumpet (7), Jim Lynch - Trumpet (2,11), and others.

This review is from: What ...Is In Between? (Audio CD)
I bought this album knowing nothing of David Lowe. I was simply interested in hearing Benjamin Zephaniah.
What a piece of luck then to find that this CD is a wonderful collection of music.

BZ's voice is as deep and wonderful as ever and the words are - as always - both thought provoking and at times amusing. However the surprise for me was that as much as I like the BZ songs (of which there are 4 here) the other tunes are just as good and in a couple of cases even better.

Despite the fact that the music varies from electronica, through Spanish and even uses wonderful arabic horns in a couple of places, it does not feel like an eclectic 'World music' collection. It is a set of songs to play to relax to on a hot sunny afternoon or maybe even at a dinner party.

Mieko Shimizu has a wonderful voice and I'm amazed that she has not been snapped up to appear on records by the likes of Groove Armada or similar.
The sample from Roger McGough is inspired on a lovely moving track (Oxygen).

Take the risk of buying this CD, like I did, and you won't be disappointed. Well done Mr Lowe - more please.

N.B. If listening to this CD makes you want to hear more Benjamin Zephania then you should try 'Us an Dem' which is an amazing collection of essentially 'Reggae poetry' set to music (try 'Me Luv me Mudder' from that recently reissued album).
