A career highlight 16 Nov 2006
Format:Audio CD
The Nashville collective fronted by Kurt Wagner are an adventurous bunch who have yet to disappoint me with any of their releases. However, if I had to choose just one title from their catalogue this would be it. WAMS brings together elements of modern Country and classic Southern Soul music in a way that will surprise those who came late to appreciate this band. It will also dispell the rumour that Lambchop is simply Kurt Wagner's recording alias.

Rather good. Not so much of a theme as Nixon or Is A Woman (which both have different themes to each other, but nevertheless have themes) so I'd say it was a group of fairly different but excellent songs rather than a splendid and coherent album, that hangs together as a whole, as the former two are.

But to paraphrase Lou Reed, "Lambchops s**t is better than everyone else's diamonds". So buy it.

Lambchop are one of the best bands around at the moment. Their fusion of country and soul really doesn't deserve the tag "alt-country" as that genre tends to be inhabited by c&w bands with a tendency to thrash about a bit, whereas Lambchop are a c&w band with a tendency to move beyond accepted practices and throw in some sublimely unexpected influences.

From the almost Grecian opener to the big band infused closing track, the good ship Lambchop smoothly navigates a wide musical spectrum whilst never losing the down to earthness of country music. This, coupled with Kurt Wagner's somnolent lyrics (alongside a few carefully chosen cover versions) makes for very enjoyable and laid back listening.
