She's No Angel

A bodyguard? Why in the world would a demon need a bodyguard? Yes, it's true Ellina Kostova is only half demon. . .and an author with a cult following, but that just means strange stuff happens. She isn't in real danger. Heck, she's in more danger from Jude Anthony, the guy her brother has hired to protect her. In big danger, actually. Because she just cannot be attracted to. . .well, anyone. She's too much of a demon in bed. No, really.

Jude has grown accustomed to being an outcast, adrift in both the mortal and preternatural worlds. Being a paid fighting machine isn't glamorous, but he does it--and many other things--spectacularly well. And man does Ellina Kostova need a lot of protection. But he needs protection, too. She's making him remember what it feels like to be human. And he's already learned no good can come of that. Especially when he's been hired not only to protect her--but also kill her. . .

"Fangs for the Memories will make you laugh until milk comes out of your nose. No, really."--MaryJanice Davidson

Not really what I wanted 23 April 2011
Format:Paperback
My first introduction to Kathy Love and I wasn't overly impressed. The quality of the writing was mostly good, she drew the main characters well enough - Jude came out well rounded and likeable, while Ellina seemed a little insubstantial. Their growing intimacy was handled well, if a bit rushed.

But the plot? What happened to it? The cover blurb says quite specifically that Jude has been hired to protect Ellina - and also to kill her. Wrong. His anxiety at the beginning, his reasons for not wanting to take on the job as her bodyguard were never shown. He had no intention - at any time - of killing her. No reason to. I hoped that would manifest as a plot twist, but no. The protagonist was painfully obvious right away. And the tiny twist (where we find out WHY Jude wanted to do one last bodyguard job) was disappointing - and obvious. Indeed, the reason the protagonist wanted to kill her was vague to the point of being invisible.

Jude's reason for being the way he is (an interesting, but unfulfilled werewolf / vampire cross) was never explained.

All in all, this was a disappointing lightweight read, with not a lot to recommend it.

I'd like to give it 2.5 stars, as I didn't abandon it. But that's not really saying much...

By Helen Hancox TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Bodyguard-falls-in-love-with-client is hardly an original plot idea (Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner spring to mind). However this is 'I Will Always Love You' with a difference - the difference being that our hero, at least, is immortal. A mixture of vampire and demon, he's feeling jaded with his world and hoping to change career; babysitting Ellina Kostova, reclusive author, should bring him the money he needs to finally give up the violent life of a bodyguard.

Only Ellina is a bit different than your average woman, being a half-demon. She doesn't think she's in danger but there are plenty of people around who don't like her and she seems to be being stalked. When her brother employs Jude Anthony to work as her bodyguard she is resistant - until she gets a good look at him.

This story was all pretty predictable. The focus was mainly on Jude and Ellina and their interactions, so much so that it was pretty obvious who the stalker was amongst the sparse group of secondary characters. I didn't find this book particularly convincing and neither character was particularly strongly drawn, but it was an OK read for a quiet evening.

Thought the book started off really well, but the ending wrapped up a little too quick. Could have been drawn out a bit more, but an ok read.
