Hilarious horror! 12 Nov 2002
Format:VHS Tape
Kenneth Connor may have perfected his role as a bumbling idiot in the Carry On films, but the role of Ernie in 'What a Carve Up!' was made for him. Kenneth revels in being flirtatious with a wonderful Shirley Eaton, whilst being absolutely petrified of everything else around him. The horror may not be like the modern films, but there are a few very spine-chilling moments.

Sidney James was also born to play his role as schmoosing lawyer Sid, but its Kenneth who takes all the best scenes, and gets the biggest laughs. Watch out for Donald Pleasance and Micheal Gough in some smaller, and yet equally scary roles, who each manage to add a very sinister air to the film.

The plot may not be 'new' but the atmosphere and the characters make this a very entertaining and individual film all round. Very, very good.

Unmissable! From the glorious understated start through the ominous invitation brought by the simply outstanding Donald Pleasance to the dynamic finish with the quite stunning twist at the end that left me astounded this film flicks effortlessly between horror and comedy punctuated by Sid James' trademark laughter.

The action never relents and you don't know what will come next: another laugh out loud one-liner from Sid, another hapless escapade from the adorable Ernie or another piece of 100% Hollywood glamour from the simply stunning Shirley Eaton.

Arguably Sid James steals the show by demonstrating that his repertoire extends quite beyond the one-dimensional womanizer of his Carry On fame that won it for me, delivering a performance of real depth and pathos.

What's that under the cover, did the butler do it and where did that organ go? All questions you'll want answering when you watch "What a Carve Up", a lovely yet sinister haunted house story that keeps you guessing until about 10 minutes from the end.

Hilarious Horror 14 Nov 2002
Format:VHS Tape
Kenneth Connor will always best be known for playing the bumbling fool in his films, but no where did he excel more at that role than in What a Carve Up! He plays Ernie, a horror novel proof reader who is scared of everything. Except the gorgeous Shirley Eaton, of course.

They are thrown together due to the death of Ernie's uncle Gabriel, and must travel to a remote northern mansion for the reading of the will. Sid James plays cocky lawyer Sid, and he plays it wonderfully, however, its Kenneth Connor who gets all of the best lines and the biggest laughs.

This may be classed as something more of a comedy today, generally because of the stars, but there are some genuinely spine-chilling moments. Donald Pleasence makes a frightening appearance, as does Micheal Gough, who both bring some good scares to the preceedings.

This is a wonderful film for all involved, and a tremendous laugh, as well as a nail-biter. The plot may not exactly be original in the modern world, but director Pat Jackson handles it with humour and individuality. A must-see!
