Amazon.co.uk Review

With Whale Rider Lisa Gerrard, the former voice of Dead Can Dance, returns with a soundtrack that follows acclaimed scores for Gladiator (with Hans Zimmer and The Insider (with Pieter Bourke). Those hoping for another glimpse into ecstasy through Gerrard's magnificent voice will be disappointed. This score to the New Zealand-set film relies more on texture and mood, with Gerrard's voice planted in a slowly undulating drift of synthesizers and sustained guitar lines.

It's not until "Biking Home" that you might even recognise Gerrard's voice in this quietly joyful mood piece. She only gives herself full, if understated, voice on the symphonic closing track "Go Forward" which echoes Gladiator's "Now We Are Free", but with Maori chanting. Though there is some compelling music on Whale Rider, much of it sounds bereft without the accompanying images. --John Diliberto, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars More ambience than Lisa, 20 Oct 2004

I bought this CD from the perspective that it was made by Lisa Gerrard and although it wasnt what I was expecting, it is still a wonderful CD.

Most songs rely on ambience with swirling keyboards, tribal drums and some lovely acoustic guitar work. Very few tracks indeed have Lisa's voice in it at all and its actually the guest vocals who steal the show with a powerful performance from a maori choir.

The ambience never gets dull (and for those who enjoy ambience I suggest the Myst game soundtracks) and the ethereal tones are heavenly and could cradle you to sleep. The rest is a fabulous fusion of oceania instrumentation that you should enjoy.

Absolutely adorable music!
To be honest, since this is not the kind of music I normally listen, I was a bit dissapointed when first listening the cd through. But the second time I fell in love with it! It's so deep and almost spiritual. When I concentrated on it, it took me to beautiful sceneries and an overwhelming atmosphere! I highly recommend. I didn't know that something this amazing even existed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the Usual Lisa but Beautifully Atmospheric, 6 Feb 2004

Those who are familiar with Lisa Gerrard's solo career ("The Mirror Pool", "Duality" and "Immortal Memory") and her Dead Can Dance days will almost certainly nurse a sense of loss at hearing this most poignant of soundtracks. For a start Lisa doesn't provide any of the vocals, and the music itself is not an epic creation in the manner of the "Gladiator" soundtrack. Still, don't dismiss it on these grounds! The music for "Whale Rider" is just as intimate and enveloping as her previous work.

Shot through with a wonderful homogenity it moves through some delicious native Maori chanting to haunting melodies fully evocative of an ancient relationship with the sea and the whales. Those who have seen the film, which I also recommend highly, will know the vital importance of Gerrard's music in its context, and might well be surprised by how well it transfers to a simpler auditory experience.

Lisa Gerrard has referred to the "Whale Rider" project as "one of the most intimate of my artistic life...because it reminded me intrinsically that we live in a world full of fragile complexity." Fragile, complex and intimate - all words which encapsulate the experience of the "Whale Rider" soundtrack and make it well worth purchasing, as a fan of the film or a fan of Lisa Gerrard.
