Product Description

Product Description

When a giant whale washes up on shore—on top of young Joe's town, in fact—no one knows what to do! The Mayor declares that the town is ruined. The Whale laments that all he's good for now is a large fish pie. The Fishmonger quickly agrees. But Joe is determined to set things right.

With the help of Joe, some impressive teamwork, invaluable wisdom from the Owl and the Innumerable Stars, and a whole lot of . . . singing, order is restored. Even better, Joe and his neighbors make a new—and very large—friend.

Critically acclaimed author-illustrator David Lucas has crafted another charming tale, paired with luminous illustrations, about the importance of determination, community, and friendship. Fans of Nutmeg and Halibut Jackson will be delighted to meet Joe as he and his neighbors join together to welcome an unexpected visitor and to rebuild their town.

From the Hardcover edition.

From the Back Cover

A Whale descends on Joe’s town, and flattens everything. "I’m truly sorry," he says. But how can everything be repaired? The townsfolk ask the wisest old bird they know, and the results are truly surprising!

Praise for David Lucas’s previous book, Halibut Jackson:
'Instant classic for once really does spring to mind.' Financial Times --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A whimsical tale 24 July 2009
Format:Paperback
I just had to read this to my two children three times in a row. It is nicely written and illustrated so it wasn't too much of a chore :-)

There are some truly lovely children's books around these days and this one of them.

The Whale 10 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
I first got this book from the library for my 2 1/2 year old and we loved it. We discovered that obviously all the other children in our local library loved it too, as it was constantly on loan so I had to give in and buy it. We could not go passed the library without my son saying, "Whale book, whale book"
My son loves to study the detailed pictures whilst I read to him, this has really made bedtime a joy for both myself and my son.

'Picture book' seems a somewhat ordinary description to apply to the excitement and wonder in these large pages. A beached whale shocks the Mayor and townsfolk into action which leads to everyone singing the rain song to provide more water to refloat the creature. There's an extraordinary amount of fine detailed observation in the large and the tiny repeated shapes, and the contrasts of the people and the houses. The words themselves are set out in shapes and places to enhance everything. This could illustrate a conservation theme, a responsibility concept, a young and old together enterprise, a team-work moral: many things could come out of it. But nothing is laboured or allowed to interfere with a good tale, absorbed through reading and relishing both the words and the pictures
