5.0 out of 5 stars Whale Adventure, 3 Aug 2006
By Will K. Williams (Chelmsford, Essex, England.) - See all my reviews
I think this book is a brilliant yet different addition to Willard Price's Adventure series. Unlike a fellow reviewer's (frankly ridiculous) idea that this book is inappropriate for young readers of today I think it is important to see this in its proper context. There are many subjects now deemed unacceptable that should not just be deleted from history. This is a story about a barbaric industry and the horrific conditions in which it was conducted. The particular boat in this story was outdated at the time it was written and the savage brutality of whaling was in no way sugar coated by Price. It's not the most attractive story in the canon but it isn't meant to be. Literature should not be updated every time a subject falls out of favour. Perhaps Moby Dick could be turned into a thrilling whale watching adventure with Captain Ahab searching for the elusive white whale in order to shoot a documentary about it. This book may not be politically correct but it still has some worth while things to say. Our society was built on industries such as this, we may have progressed but we should remember where we came from.

Will K. Williams

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book but with a semi-repeating storyline, 20 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Hal and Roger are making up the final men on a old whaling ship when, as usual, they find themselves in trouble. Firstly Roger has to spend the night defending a freshly killed whale with a spade and then Hal is ordered 80 whips with the cat of nine tales. He is about to be given the whips when another whale is spotted, the men are called and they man the whale boats. As a lance harpoon is thrust into the whales lungs, the whale smashes the tiny boat and Hal manages to grab the harpoon and hangs on. Using his use of knowlage of animals manages to steer the whale back to the big whaling ship. During the night the ship is attacked by a large group of whales, the ship sinks and all the men pile into one boat. they manage to send a message by albertross and then they are picked up by a modern whaling ship.
