Product Description

Product Description

Wet-on-Wet Watercolour Painting offers practical answers to the most frequently asked questions and provides clear and sound advice on all the wet-on-wet watercolour techniques. Ideal for those with a basic grasp of watercolour painting, this is the perfect follow-up to the previous book in the series, Watercolour Painting. The book begins with an introduction to the tools and materials needed for the medium and how to use them, looking at the different types of brushes, papers and paints. This is followed by an exploration into wet-on-wet. Simple exercises help explain the techniques backed up by a selection of paintings which are broken down into step-by-step stages to provide further inspiration. Lavishly illustrated with colour photographs throughout as well as step-by-step artworks and diagrams on the theory of colour, this is an essential practical guide for anyone interested in this popular and satisfying medium.

Every watercolourist who has tried wet-on-wet will know how difficult it is to get the timing right for the effect they want. Ewa shows the different stages in the drying process, when to add more water, more colour, or leave alone. With practice and patience you will learn how to avoid unwanted hard edges, encourage blooms and create beautiful, glowing, washy watercolours.

No other book has more in-depth demonstrations of wet-on-wet techniques. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I agree with the reviewer who points out that this is extremely badly translated from the original text, however, I own many art books that try to explain the mysteries of the ever elusive wet-on-wet technique and none of them do it as much justice as this book does, which is why I did not hesitate to give it 5 stars. If you can plough through the dense, heavy-going language, which I did by taking a pen to the text and taking it apart myself, you will definately benefit from the artist's wisdom for there is no other book out there that explains this notoriously difficult medium in so much detail. Don't be put off by your first attempts at painting because it does take practise to become familiar with how the paint reacts to the water (timing is key). I would not recommend this book for beginners, though. This is definately aimed at the more seasoned watercolourist.

Ewa Karpinska's work is wonderful and her illustrations are clear and well organised. The problem is that the translation is very strange, some of it difficult to understand and does a disservice to the quality of her work. A watercolorist would gain a great deal from this in understanding the quality of water in painting but they will have to fight through the text to reach the meaning.
