5.0 out of 5 stars A science fiction classic 23 Feb 2010
By LXIX TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I first saw Westworld in my childhood and it stuck in the mind. This is a classic 'holiday from hell' movie - with a major difference - as it's about an escapist theme park populated by robots. 'Delos' is sufficiently remote (based in the desert) and for $1,000 per day it offers wealthy tourists the opportunity to indulge in a choice of 3 fantasy environments - Westworld, Medieval World and Roman World. Our two main characters opt for Westworld and for the first 2 days enjoy the stereotypical trappings of the frontier in 1880: gunfights (which they're guaranteed to win), salon girls (yes, believe it or not but it's open season on these electronic women), a run in with the sheriff and, of course, a large bar room brawl.

Slowly but surely things start to go wrong as minor malfunctions increase. Eventually the beaks running the show behind discreet monitors lose control and all hell breaks loose. Yul Brynner is excellent here as the stoic, mean, homicidal machine and a classic chase ensues.

Morally, there's a strong undertone of the dangers of messing with technology. Out of control robots and artificial intelligence have been done before, but considering that this was made in 1973, it's a classic in its originality.

Westworld is rather short at 85 minutes and apart from a trailer there's no extras here on the DVD, however, it's vintage science fiction and is thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delos is the vacation of the future...... 4 April 2011
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Westworld is written and directed by Michael Crichton and stars Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin. Story is set in the near future at an amusement park, no ordinary amusement park, tho. Here there are three worlds, Western, Medieval and Roman, where for $1,000 a day the clients can act out their fantasies in worlds alive with androids brilliantly made to look and act like human beings. But one day something goes wrong, there's a glitch and the androids fail to respond to their programming...

A monstrously great set up makes for a fine piece of sci-fi cinema. True enough to say that it needed a far better director than Crichton to fully realise the potential on offer, both visually and thematically, but Westworld manages to overcome the directors failings and reward the patient viewer. Seeping with bleak overtones as the scientists force technology to over reach itself, the film is propelled forward by a clinically robotic performance from Bryner as an android gunslinger. Clearly riffing on his character Chris Adams from The Magnificent Seven, Bryner is a perfect fit for a seemingly unstoppable force, cold dead shark eyes and fluid in the walk, he's a memorable sci-fi bad guy. Around him the rest of the cast are only adequate, but in a film revolving around androids looking like humans it's barely an issue. The effects used for the androids POV are effective, as is the reveal of what lays beneath the skin, while the finale plays out with pace and no little excitement.

Very much a forerunner to The Terminator, and even Predator, Westworld belies its 70s exterior to reveal an intelligent and potent little shocker. 7/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Before Terminator 13 Dec 2008
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
Nowadays if you ask someone to name a film that has a robot shaped as a man that kills, people will say Terminator. Long before then though this fantastic movie had been made. In a special complex people can live out their dreams in Medieval World, Roman World, or West World. You can kill the robots and live out your fantasies (including sexual) with these androids. But what happens when they start to go wrong?

In an ideal holiday complex things are just about to go drastically wrong. With the androids going out of control the holidaymakers find that they are playing for their lives. Yul Brynner is excellent as the resolute killing android cowboy.

Although most people must have seen this film at some stage, it is always good to watch again and again. I have heard ruomours for a few years now that this is going to be re-made, but whether that will happen or not, we'll just have to wait and see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Westworld [1973] [Blu-ray] [US Import] 23 July 2014
Format:Blu-ray
Westworld [1973] [Blu-ray] [US Import] A WONDERFULLY ENJOYABLE FANTASY! GREAT STUFF!

For $1,000 a day, vacationers can indulge whims at the theme park called Westworld. They can bust up a bar or bust out of jail, drop in on a brothel or get the drop on a gunslinger. It's all safe: the park's lifelike androids are programmed never to harm the customers. But not all droids are getting with the program. Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park and Twister) wrote and made his directing debut with this futuristic thriller that heralded moviemaking's future as the first feature to use digitized images. Richard Benjamin and James Brolin portray pals confronted by a simulated reality turned real. And Yul Brynner is their stalking, spur-jangling nemesis. It's man versus machine – in a tomorrow that isn't big enough for the both of them.

Cast: Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Norman Bartold, Alan Oppenheimer, Victoria Shaw, Dick Van Patten, Linda Gaye Scott, Steve Franken, Michael T. Mikler, Terry Wilson, Majel Barrett, Anne Randall, Julie Marcus, Sharyn Wynters and Anne Bellamy

One of the best futuristic thrillers ever made. Loved this film when I was a kid and it still holds it's own over forty years since it's creation.
