From Amazon.co.uk

Welcome to Delos, the high-tech Disneyland for adults that Michael Crichton created for Westworld, a nifty science fiction thriller from 1973 that also marked the popular novelist's feature-film directorial debut. The movie is so named because the vacationing buddies who travel to Delos (James Brolin, Richard Benjamin) choose Westworld as their destination (the other choices being Roman World and Medieval World), where they are free to indulge their movie-inspired fantasies of the Wild West). The place is populated by perfectly humanlike robots programmed and monitored to cater to every guest's fancy, from brothel beauties to black-hatted gunslingers (such as the villain played by Yul Brynner). But fun turns into abject horror when the robots--particularly Brynner's villain--begin to malfunction and Delos turns into an amusement park that's anything but amusing. Westworld has moments of camp and the look of a low-budget back-lot production, but two decades before Crichton revamped his idea to create Jurassic Park, this movie made the most of its interesting and exciting premise. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A science fiction classic 23 Feb 2010
By LXIX TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first saw Westworld in my childhood and it stuck in the mind. This is a classic 'holiday from hell' movie - with a major difference - as it's about an escapist theme park populated by robots. 'Delos' is sufficiently remote (based in the desert) and for $1,000 per day it offers wealthy tourists the opportunity to indulge in a choice of 3 fantasy environments - Westworld, Medieval World and Roman World. Our two main characters opt for Westworld and for the first 2 days enjoy the stereotypical trappings of the frontier in 1880: gunfights (which they're guaranteed to win), salon girls (yes, believe it or not but it's open season on these electronic women), a run in with the sheriff and, of course, a large bar room brawl.

Slowly but surely things start to go wrong as minor malfunctions increase. Eventually the beaks running the show behind discreet monitors lose control and all hell breaks loose. Yul Brynner is excellent here as the stoic, mean, homicidal machine and a classic chase ensues.

Morally, there's a strong undertone of the dangers of messing with technology. Out of control robots and artificial intelligence have been done before, but considering that this was made in 1973, it's a classic in its originality.

Westworld is rather short at 85 minutes and apart from a trailer there's no extras here on the DVD, however, it's vintage science fiction and is thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Before Terminator 13 Dec 2008
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Nowadays if you ask someone to name a film that has a robot shaped as a man that kills, people will say Terminator. Long before then though this fantastic movie had been made. In a special complex people can live out their dreams in Medieval World, Roman World, or West World. You can kill the robots and live out your fantasies (including sexual) with these androids. But what happens when they start to go wrong?

In an ideal holiday complex things are just about to go drastically wrong. With the androids going out of control the holidaymakers find that they are playing for their lives. Yul Brynner is excellent as the resolute killing android cowboy.

Although most people must have seen this film at some stage, it is always good to watch again and again. I have heard ruomours for a few years now that this is going to be re-made, but whether that will happen or not, we'll just have to wait and see.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yul never be the same 25 Sep 2005
By bernie VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Theme parks get more sophisticated. Now instead of faking it with actors, the people at Delos have come up with the ultimate getaway; they have created several theme parks of which one is called "Westworld" and use robots instead. They can take real bullets and be repaired. As a side interest they also have other realistic body parts.

To this theme park comes Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin) for a little R&R. At first he is a little shy then he actually gets into things. Everyone is having a great time.

Unknown to the guests Delos is experiencing an anomaly with its system. It seems that in spite off all the fail safes a guest gets shot. Then everything snowballs out of control. The most out of controlest is a robot gun slinger that looks an awful lot like Yul Brynner.

You feel that you are there. So what can you do?

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Film - Ok Release 13 May 2009
Format:DVD
Westworld is a fun film, but the DVD is a let down. Based in the future, the film focuses on a theme park called Westworld, where vacationers, for $ 1000 a day, put on their cowboy gear and become part of a perfect recreation of the Old West. They can bust up a bar, drop in on a brothel and break out of jail. The town is populated by androids, programmed never to harm the customers, but the droids are evolving...
This film is certainly one for the boys and a fun take on the Western Genre. The DVD has only one extra - the original trailer. The film is presented in 2.35:1 Widescreen. The transfer is typical for a film of this period, with signs of grain and slight damage here and there. Detail is good and contrast is above average. Soundtrack is adequate in Stereo; it's a 70's movie, so a 5.1 remix would be limited.
