Pros: - Earphones fundementally, if you are serious about music and want the best sound for your money, are about sound quality. These deliver amazing sound quality. The highs, mids and lows are very clean, bright and precise. Only at very high volumes did the higher frequencies sound a bit grating. Overall the sound is fairly neutral but not dull. As with all good earphones the sound achieved is dependent on a good ear fit. On first sounding using the pre-fitted tips i was really disappointed with the quality until i had spent about half an hour trying the variety of tips that come with the phones until i found the perfect fit......then playing Whole Lotta Love the real sublime soundscape shone through. Actually heard new aspects of the song i didn't with my RHA 750i's, which are very decent earphones in themselves. I would say to get the best sound fitting is critical with these earphones, i haven't just been able to pop them out and back in quickly and get a good sound like my 750i's. They need adjusting and fitting properly but they are worth it. To sum up.....superb.

Noise isolation with music on is great, even at fairly low volumes.

- Extras are really great. 2 detachable cables, 1 with iphone control. It works on my LG 3 but only the play/pause button not the volume button. I presume this works on an iphone. Plenty of ear tips silicone and comply of varied sizes. A cleaning tool. Very sturdy snazzy looking carry case and changeable faceplates. I have put a blue on one earpiece and acred on the other so i can tell left from right easily.

Cons:- The cons are only slight compared to the pro's. One is the actual look of the earpieces. They look like shiny acetate plastic units.

I've been using these for a few days now. They are sooo amazing they have prompted my first ever amazon review. I bought them to replace a pair of Sony XBA-30s that I lost a few weeks ago on a business trip. Its not a bad comparison as they were also 3 BA earphones and a close price point. I commute 3 hours most days by train and longer when I need to see customers and so have invested in decent earphones because music, combined with a bit of mediation and a chance to catch-up on work is what keeps me sane for the journey. I did plenty of research before I bought the Sonys a couple of years ago and the same again this time. The Westone W30s came out on top because of the other reviews I found for them and they also have a mic which I need as I use them for work calls as well as music and a lot of the higher-end headphones seem to think that they are too good to be used for voice calls and simply don't provide it. The Sonys were very good and a step above the previous Klipsch ones I had, but the clarity of the sound of the W30s at lows mid and highs are phenomenal and at the same time rounded - I really hear the music in a way that I have not heard with any other headphones - its such a joy. The noise isolation provided by the wide variety of tips is also pretty - if you are listing to some pretty sparse ambient or classical music you will find that voices cut through a little, but otherwise its excellent. I really don't think you will be disappointed.

The detailed warm sound of W40 - pure enjoyment!!! 18 Dec. 2013
By Twister - Published on Amazon.com
As much I enjoy reviewing and sharing my experience of headphones in different price categories, nothing puts a bigger smile on my face when I dive into sound with multi-driver IEMs (in-ear monitors). If you just want to listen to a melody or vocals, and you consider that all headphones sound the same, you can probably skip this review. For others who want to experience the real sound, you will know and appreciate a meaning of three-way crossover which separates bass, mids, and treble to drive 4 separate balanced armature drivers packed inside of miniature in-ear device that takes your breath away when you rediscover details of a sound you never thought existed before. Westone has been around for 50+ years working and perfecting this technology. They are among a handful of audio manufacturers who are well known for their top quality and design, and also being able to produce a premium line of multi-driver affordable headphones. This year they are introducing a new series of W10, W20, and W40 with a lot of design and sound improvements. The model numbering of their headphones corresponds to a number of drivers used in a design (W10 - singe driver, W20 - dual driver, W40 - quad driver), and for my review I was provided with W40 quad driver unit. Lets take a closer look to see what I have found.

Starting with a package box, right away the outside sleeve sets a tone of a premium product. Filled with a lot of info about W-Series design as well as details about this specific W40 model, you get a very clear picture of the product even before opening the box. After sliding the sleeve off, and opening the magnetic flap of soft touch box - you are presented with a display of W40 IEMs and included accessories. What is amazing, no matter if you are getting single driver with less expensive W10 or quad driver top of the line W40 - it will come with the same set of accessories and a similar looking design. Looking into accessories, the first thing that will stand out from a crowd is a heavy duty bright orange Monitor Vault - a specially design storage hard shell case for W-series which is air and moisture proof, has a hard plastic shell exterior and soft foam lining, and even an air seal valve. This is something you can take along with you on any adventure, even if you are planing to climb a mountain or go kayaking! Furthermore, you get a set of 5 pairs of True-Fit foam tips and 5 pairs of STAR silicone tips, all color coded so you don't have to through a pile of mix'n'match tips. You also get a wax removal tool, 2 sets of removable cables, and 3 sets of exchangeable faceplates and hex driver to remove these.

One thing is to talk about customizable full size over-ear headphones where you can exchange and replace different plates, but these are tiny earbuds that have a capability of faceplate customization!!! Furthermore, you have 2 sets of cables, one is a braided audio only cable and the other one MFI cable with in-line remote and mix. Designed for iDevices, the multifunction button works perfectly with Android phones for play/pause/call, playback control, and to start Google Now. Phone calls were loud and clear, and I had no issues controlling my Note 2 with a remote. Both cables are highly flexible which is important because W-series can only be worn with wire over your ear. Epic cable design has a sliding tension tab which enhances over-ear fitment but bringing cables closer, and I was actually surprised how well it worked considering its a braided/twisted cable. Another very important point about these cables is their replaceable nature and using a new universal connector that works interchangeable between different Westone models as well as other brands. Having a replaceable cable is very important when you are investing so much money into high quality headphones where broken cable is the most common point of failure. At the other end of the cable, you have 90-degree 3.5mm gold plated connector which a decent cable strain relief and perfect sizing to work with most of the phone cases.

Earpieces itself are very lightweight, low profile, and comfortable to fit inside of your earlobe. Its a very clever design considering amount of technology they have to fit inside of such a small device and still make it low profile so it doesn't stick out. Of course, all this technology packed inside of a such small package leads to one big question - so how does it sound? When it comes to such a complex design, you can no longer use a judgment of the cost vs sound quality. Considering a number of other in-ear headphones I have reviewed, I can tell you with certainty that even in this premium price range it all comes down to a company and how they envisioned interpretation of the sound - thus a sound signature of different headphones. While in the past I have reviewed quad-armature driver design of UE900, those were more analytical upfront IEMs. Westone W40 have a warm and smooth sound with an enhanced bass response. I would even dare to say it has somewhat of a "fun" signature with slightly recessed mids, more detailed extended bass with a nice quantity, and tamed treble for a more comfortable extended listening experience. Without a doubt the sound is very detailed and you will enjoy analyzing every part of your favorite tune while rediscovering new elements you haven't noticed before, but the sound will not be crispy clear but rather warm and lush. The soundstage is average in width. Also, because of this warm sound signature, W40 is not as forgiven when you listen to low quality mp3s or audio streaming which will sound dull. I would definitely recommend at least 320kbps or FLAC. With it's 31 ohm impedance, I had no problem driving it directly from Note 2 as well as my laptop. I also tested it with E18, and with an exception of some improvement in dynamics at high gain setting, no other significant changes were heard. These headphones are definitely perfect for mobile use. In general, they have very durable and rugged design that will work great for outdoor use as well.

Overall, I enjoyed W40 very much and was very pleased with its warm and smooth sound. The sound signature of these is very close to "fun" without too much of a dip in mids. Those who enjoy an extra bass, will be very pleased with their sound as well. For others who are looking for a more analytical neutral sound to analyze every detail - you might want to look into other multi-driver designs. Also, if you are on a budget but still want to experience a luxury of W-Series from Westone, you have an option of either single or dual driver W10 and W20 designs. Although some details in sound will be sacrificed going down in a number of drivers, these are still balanced armature drivers where Westone tunes each model for sound precision. I would definitely give them a listen!!!

Simply unbelievable 30 May 2014
By BarefootInTheHead - Published on Amazon.com
I'm a tough critic. As far as earphones go, I've had the cheap ones that come with iPhones, seeking better quality and more noise reduction I've gone up to the $100 Bose and wasn't blown away, but thought they were okay. But when I found myself traveling a lot recently I wondered if there wasn't a higher-end alternative. Google-ing around I came across the Westones, replete with the rave reviews, etc. They have many different models. I researched, I debated, then decided to go up the ladder to $300 for the W20's. When they arrived I had that buyer's remorse feeling, as in: did I really just pay $300 for earbuds? Well, yes, I did. And then, in the unpackaging, I was inundated with 10 pairs of differently-sized silicone and foam tips, a tool for unlocking exchangable faceplates (what?), an ear wax cleaner ... no! I just want to put them in my ears and listen. But, I calmed down, found the foam tip size that suited my ear, had to practice a tad to get accustomed to the way Westone wants you to insert it into your ear canal and let the cable hook over your ear.... Finally! At last! My dual driver Westone W20 earphones were ready to be put to the test. Wow!! Double wow!! Okay, confession, I'm not an audiophile. I have a great little Bluetooth Bose Soundlink Mini which I love when I hear music off my terrific Kindle Fire HDX. I wasn't happy, but I wasn't unhappy, with my Bose ear buds. But these Westone W20 earphones are just stunning. Start a movie on your Kindle Fire or watch one on your computer and the clairty and range, from bass to high frequency, is shockingly brilliant. The foam tips -- the ones I chose -- totally block out all external noises, something no other earphone, including the $100 Bose's, just don't do. And that's huge for me b/c I'm a professional writer and when I hear gardeners with their leaf blowers or jetliners (I live on a hill where planes take off directly in my line of sight) I want total outside noise elimination if I can buy it. And the W20's, short of noise-canceling headphones, are the only earphones I've used that accomplish this 100%. Put on music and the distinction between $100 and under earphones and these W20's is chasmic in comparison. On my MacBook Pro I have 16 volume levels. I can't even get past 4 or 5 without fearing I'm going to blow out my eardrums; movies/TV shows require me to go to 6 or 7, max. A couple times I went up in volume just to see what it sounded like and the quality was amazing: zero distortion, incredible range. In fact, it improved the higher up in volume I went!! I don't think I've been this happy with a product in a long time. There's no question that the adage "you get what you pay for" is an apt description for these amazing earphones. No, I don't work for the company, and at $300 I promise you I would employ all my writerly skills to villify them if they were only a minor bump up from the $100 Bose's. They're not; they're a quantum leap. If generic earbuds are a 1 on a scale of 1-10, Bose's a 3, these are an 11, off the charts, that nonpareil.

Incredible well-balanced sound, good build quality! 7 July 2014
By BG - Published on Amazon.com
I purchased these a few weeks back and have to say they are incredible earbuds! I upgraded from my Grado GR10's after they broke and have zero regrets. The W40's provide extremely clear, vivid and well balanced sound. I listen to all different genres of music and find these to be great for everything I throw at them. Definitely pricy, but worth the cash for any audiophile or music enthusiast. They also come with 2 cords, a variety of silicone and foam tips and a very sturdy case. Very solid build quality.

Worth The Price. 1 Jun. 2014
By Colby - Published on Amazon.com
I have own many quality earphones and have never written a review before. The Westone W20 are worth the asking price. I suggest breaking them in for 48 hours before use. The soundstage is clear and the lows are excellent. I prefer listening to the W20 over my Sennheiser Momentum over ear head phones. The fact that you can replace the cord ensures that your earphones will last a long time. Many of my other earphone develop shorts in the cord within six months to a year. I have had mine for six months and love them.

Crystal clear 5 April 2014

I felt foolish coughing up $400 for a pair of these, for the 5 days or so that it took for them to arrive. But now that I have them, I am delighted. They seem very neutral to me, with excellent bass and fantastic clarity. I live in a noisy house and drive a noisy car, so the combination of this clarity and the passive noise reduction of the foam tips make for a great combination. Tonight I am digging back through my collection of music, like a kid in a candy store, digging out songs new and old and rediscovering the quiet layers and nuance. I will be losing some sleep...
