Book Description

23 Feb 2010
Weston-super-Mare and the Aeroplane 1910-2010 is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of the association between Weston-super-Mare and the aeroplane over the last one hundred years. The authors cover a broad range of topics including: the pioneering aviators who visited Weston-super-Mare before the Great War, the joy riding outfits and aerial circuses that visited the town in the 1930s, as well as the laying down of Weston Airport for Norman Edgar Ltd and its subsequent take over by the Straight Corporation and the general expansion that ensued. The authors also explore the impact of the war and how it impacted upon Norman Edgar Ltd and consider the company's post-war entry into aircraft manufacturing and the various post-war flying clubs.

This is a local history, but the authors were involved in manufacturing - of aeroplanes - and this is their story. In an England where manufacturing may well be making a comeback after the disasters of relying on financial "services", this book is full of the real world's problems. Looking for somewhere to build wing-spars and finding it in a carpet factory in a village. Organising the staff and the buses to carry them to work. Building a bridge over the railway line for those buses. Getting a permit (in wartime) for the steel for the bridge

If schools and colleges still have room for books, this is one for the engineering library, hard-backed, full of lessons about business for the aspiring student, which will not be in the lectures on maths or materials technology. If we are to succeed in the future, we need to build on these memories of success, like we needed those 3336 Beaufighters that were built in Weston. Pity there's no index, but with today's computers you can soon write your own, and by then, you wil lhave read the book

5.0 out of 5 stars Weston aeroplanes and helicopters. 3 April 2010
Format:Hardcover
As an Old Westonian, it was very exciting to read about the development of Weston Airport. Very gratifying to find Weston in those days was so far sighted and lively. I well remember the Brabazon flying over and the crack of planes going through the sound barrier. This book brings it all back to life in a lively and interesting way. It is likely that no aircraft of note visited Weston without being documented. The number of wartime factories in Weston was a real eyeopener. Congratulations to the authors for a brilliant effort.

This was recommended to me by a friend- and its well worth the read. If you are a local resident or have associations with the town of Weston super mare or are interested in the history of aviation this should be of interest. Currently there is very little left on the dilapidated site to indicate the scale of weston's involvement in aviation right from the start. Apart from a helicopter museum which is well worth a visit in itself. So the detail in this book comes as something of a revelation. It gives very full detail from the start of aviation when aeroplanes were very rare of visits and landings on the sands. To ferry services to Wales. To the build up of aircraft production for world war 2 and all the work involved. Local air service companies and aero clubs. The R.A.F. camp at Locking, local gliding and the start of Westland's involvement with helicopters and the later sad decline and demise of the industry and of the airport. There is a wealth of detail here complemented by some fascinating black and white photographs. Well researched and highly readable it can be strongly recommended.
