This is the most maddening review I have ever written.

Westminster Records was an independent American record label, in business from 1949 to 1965.
They had a reputation for High Fidelity sound and terrible LP pressings.
Records were issued in the UK under contract to Nixa.
Universal now owns the rights to the Westminster catalog.

The performances are uniformly wonderful and deserving of 5 stars.
- some of the Scherchen performances are weird, but still wonderful.
My complaint is with Universal Classics home office.

Back in 2013, the Korean branch of Universal Classics issued the (almost) complete Westminster Legacy:
Volume 1 = 59 CDs: Chamber Music - Westminster Legacy
Volume 2 = 65 CDs: Orchestral Music - CLASSIC CD, WESTMINSTER LEGACY VOL.2 - ORCHESTRAL RECORDINGS COLLECTION (Limited Box) 65 CD BOX SET[002kr]

Insanely expensive.
I decided to wait for the European release. Based on past experience, I assumed it would be more affordable.
Now its here, and yes, it is more affordable.
It has the same artwork as the original boxes, minus the Korean writing.
BUT - instead of 124 CDs in two boxes, we are given 40 CDs in one box - the European box is a sampler:

Of the 23 orchestral CDs in this box, 17 have already been issued - either by DG, or in an earlier incarnation, by MCA.
Whenever possible, Universal chose the LEAST sought-after recordings for inclusion.

"40 CDs of legendary recordings, several of them new to CD" states the advertising on the lid of the thick card board box. Gently pull it off because it is glued on.There is no doubt that there are jewels to be found in this box set.(see my CD reviews further on).Behind the box is the composers name and the music to be played. The lid opens backwards;yet inside the thick cardboard box is another glued in.The back end has a rubber bar wrapped in cardboard. The front end has a piece of foam to protect the CD sleeves, which has the original art on the front.Behind on a light grey background, the CD number is in white. The music to be played, composer and artist, orchestra and conductor involved, printed in black. There are single sleeves, also double sleeves which has Stereo, composer and music to be played printed on the spine.Five double CDs.The CDs are easy to get out.All the CDs are bright red, with CD number and composer and music to be played printed in white. The box set is very light, about the size of EMI Eminence and Ashkenazy 50 years on Decca box sets. This is important information, because some boxes are made with thin cardboard, which do fall apart. DGG issued this release.

There is a 100 page booklet containing information about the history of the Westminster label,in English and French and German. Many previously unpublished photos. Also,CD numbers, music to be played, conductor and artists.Index at the back, composer, music plus CD number. Well thought out. Limited edition. They are not joking. I have seen CDs in a box set, each 2 pounds, sold singularly for twelve pounds later on. Articles on the Chamber music, conductors and pianists and vocalists. No English translations of songs and opera.

Like London buses, you don't get any Westminster recordings for ages, then several come along at once. If this were the only collection available, there would be no question about seizing it (see the excellent review above), but in fact it comes in the wake of two huge Universal box sets from South Korea and there is significant overlap. Westminister Legacy (The Orchestral Collection) and Westminster Legacy (The Chamber Collection) comprise 124 CDs between them, seventeen of which are included in the DG set - in other words, almost half the DG set is already in my collection. And the two Korean sets don't cherry pick in the same way; Scherchen's entire Beethoven symphony cycle is included, not just 5 of them, and his Mahler 5, 7 and 10 (Adagio) are there in addition to 1 and 2. Where the DG set scores is in including instrumental and vocal recordings; will two more box sets turn up in Korea to cover these, or should one go for the DG set to acquire them?

So I'd recommend anyone wishing to investigate the wonderful Westminster legacy to go for the Korean sets - except that it already seems difficult to find them and when you do they're about twice what I paid for them a bare three months ago. A rather more coherent global strategy from Universal would be helpful. In the meantime, you decides how much money you're prepared to pay and you takes your choice.

IGNORE ANY REVIEWS POSTED BEFORE FEB 18, 2014 - THEY ARE FOR A DIFFERENT PRODUCT 18 Feb. 2014
By John Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a review of the new 40 CD Europe/North American edition: Westminster Legacy: The Collector's Edition
Not the 124 CD Korean edition released last year.
Amazon has confused the situation by combining reviews for two different products.
The new box was released on February 18, 2014 - any review dated before then is for the Korean box (wish I could afford it).

This is the most maddening review I have ever written.

Hermann Scherchen (1891-1966) was Westminster's principal conductor.
One of the Greats. His interpretations could sometimes be eccentric, but never boring.
He made his reputation as an interpreter of Modern Music, but most of his recordings were of the Classics: Bach, Beethoven and Haydn.
The closest Westminster let him come to the Twentieth Century was Reinhold Gliere.
A complete box of Hermann Scherchen's Westminster recordings alone would have come to about 50 CDs.

Westminster's second conductor was Artur Rodzinski (1892-1958), another of the Greats, and probably insane (he was rumoured to carry a loaded pistol at rehearsals).
In a five year period, 1943 to 1948, he went from being Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra to the New York Philharmonic to the Chicago Symphony to the Unemployment Line.
Westminster Records came along at just the right time.

Westminster's orchestras were Beecham's Royal Philharmonic (without Beecham) - renamed the "Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of London" - and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra.
The "Vienna State Opera Orchestra" has a roster of about 300 musicians - the first 100 constitute the "Vienna Philharmonic", one of the world's great orchestras.
It is unlikely that many Philharmonic members played in Westminster's recordings.

Famous guest conductors:
- Sir Adrian Boult recorded Holst and Vaughan Williams in Vienna. These are in this box, but NOT his hard-to-find recording of Mozart's G Minor Symphony and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Aargh!.
- Erich Leinsdorf made the first complete set of Mozart Symphonies with the Royal Philharmonic (the last three are included).
- Rene Leibowitz, apostle of Arnold Schoenberg and Offenbach, recorded Berlioz Symphonie fantastique in Vienna.
- Hans Knappertsbusch recorded Bruckner and Wagner with the Munich Philharmonic.
- Pierre Monteux recorded Beethoven and Berlioz with the London Symphony.
Great performances, but they have been continuously available on CD for the past thirty years.

CHAMBER MUSIC + INSTRUMENTAL RECORDINGS:
- Beethoven String Quartets, Op18,No.4 / Op59,No.3 - Smetana Quartet / Op59,No.2 - Janacek Quartet
- Beethoven Piano Sonatas 8,23,29 - Egon Petri
- Dvorak: Quintet, Op.97 / Sextet, Op.48 - European String Quartet
- Faure and Franck: Piano works - Jorg Demus (mono)
- Mendelssohn: Octet - Janacek and Smetana Quartets
- Mozart: String Quartet k590 / Quintet k516 - Amadeus Quartet (mono)
- Mozart Piano Sonatas k310 / k570 - Daniel Barenboim
- Scarlatti: 11 Keyboard Sonatas - Clara Haskil (mono)
- Schubert: String Quintet D956 / Octet D803 - Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet (mono)
- Schubert: Fantasie D760 'Wanderer' / Moments Musicaux D780 / Impromptus D899 - Paul Badura-Skoda (mono)
- Guitar Recital - Julian Bream, rec.1955, before he was famous (mono)

A bit more thought went into this selection.
Westminster's chamber music recordings were made in Vienna.
The Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet actually included Philharmonic members.
Nice, but they made many more recordings than are in this box.
Guest appearances by the Amadeus Quartet (early), and the Janacek and Smetana Quartets (in their prime).
- House pianists were Paul Badura-Skoda and Jorg Demus.
Also some recordings by the venerable Clara Haskil and Egon Petri, plus the youthful Raymond Lewenthal and Daniel Barenboim.
- Violinist Erica Morini and guitarist Julian Bream (age 22) complete an impressive roster.

VOCAL RECORDINGS -- GREAT SINGERS -- NO TEXT OR TRANSLATIONS -- NO PLOT SUMMARY -- NO PROGRAM NOTES -- AARGH!
- Duparc: Melodies - Leopold Simoneau
- Handel: Rodelinda - Theresa Stitch-Randall, Maureen Forrester etc. (3 CDs)
- Mozart: Lieder - Maria Stader
- Respighi: Il tramonto - Sena Jurinac, Barylli Quartet (mono)
- Schumann: Frauenliebe und leben, Liederkreis - Sena Jurinac (mono)
- Beverly Sills Aria Recital

Original jacket format for LP covers, but no program notes on the back. They are missed.
To end on the plus side, the box and booklet are very attractive.

P.S. Deutschegrammophon.com provides a link to an English translation of the "Wellington's Victory" rehearsal,
but not to the vocal works. Aargh indeed.

P.P.S. Universal also owns the back catalog of Command Records.
Command's 1960s recordings of William Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony, engineered by Enoch Light, were highly sought after by audiophiles, despite the snap, crackle and pop of their LP pressings.
Maybe Universal will follow this up with a box of the "Command Legacy"?
This time I hope they give us everything.

Five stars for archivists, students of performance history, and Westminster completists; 4.5 for others 13 Feb. 2014

NB: As frequently happens, Amazon has mistakenly cross-posted reviews to pages where they do not apply. The review that follows pertains to the box of recordings listed as Westminster Legacy, NOT to Westminster Legacy: The Collector's Edition. The latter box--the only one of the several vast Westminster sets not to be imported from Korea--is also the outstanding bargain of the bunch. If Westminster recordings are important to you, consider buying this box as soon as possible (even if it entails something as risky as being late with a mortgage or alimony payment!), since there can be hardly any doubt that Internet sellers here and elsewhere will buy them up by the gross in anticipation of reselling them at a 250% markup several months down the road.
___________________________________________________________________

What this reviewer wrote elsewhere about volume 2, the orchestral recordings, in the Korean-produced "Westminster legacy" series is true for this set of chamber works, too (with a pair of concertos as bonus extras). A remarkable collection, it is unfortunately priced accordingly and is thus too rich for my blood. Happily I own almost half of these recordings as either CDs or LPs. For those who can afford it, however, treasures await.

The true legacy of Westminster Records is contained within a mere dozen years: from 1949--when the company was founded by the London-born James Grayson, a profoundly artistic and sensitive entrepreneur with deep pockets, and two partners, Michael Naida and Henry Gage--to December 1960, when the partners felt compelled by the drain on their purses to sell the company. The three owners were wise or lucky enough to engage a like-minded technical and production staff, including a hypereccentric but almost equally imaginative executive producer named Kurt List (1913-1970), to help them record important but widely neglected artists, most of them Central European, in great and varied repertory.

Incidentally, anyone interested in learning about Westminster and its many important recording projects could hardly do better than consult an in-depth article by Jerome F.Weber, "The Westminster Recording Company," published in the Winter 1996 issue (no. 7) of the magazine then called International Classic Record Collector and now called Classical Recordings Quarterly. The editor, then as now, was Alan Sanders, as scholarly an editor, listener, and reviewer as one could ever hope to encounter.

Historical performances! 27 Oct. 2012
By Hiram Gomez Pardo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If you have the chance to get this superb collection, you may consider yourself more than lucky. This historical collection preserves the memory of true documents. The Barylli Quartet, The Konzerthaus of Vienna, Paul Badura Skoda, Daniel barenboim, Jörg Demus and Edith Farnadi were true driving forces during the fifties.

I have only a part of this ambitious project. So, try to get it and make it yours.

Treasures resurrected! 19 Feb. 2014

This box arrived and I was instantly hooked. There are many recordings included that I have owned for a long time on vinyl, so it was like meeting old friends. One of the most dear to me is the 1964 recording of Handel's "Rodelinda". I lived in the Netherlands at the time and it took me five long months to receive it from the States. There were not many Handel opera recordings at that time, so this was a major find in 1967. I know the recording is now quite old and the style is dated, but the enthusiasm of the artists is palpable. Theresa Stich-Randall was not a Handel singer and is clearly past her best, but never mind. Then there is the Beethoven 9th under Monteux, the 3rd and 6th under the very modern sounding Scherchen.Bruckner under Knappertsbusch, Clara Haskil in Mozart, the great Erica Morini in Tchaikovsky and Brahms. The list goes on and on. Beautiful presentation in the booklet, and complete recording information in the booklet as well as on the sleeves. Obviously a lot of thought went into this project and I cannot thank Universal enough for making these treasures available to a wide public. Buy it before it disappears!

What is there to say? 25 Mar. 2014

I will not try to preach to the choir here. I am simply overwhelmed by the clarity, musicality, depth, and (dare I say it) spirituality of these performances. It will take me a long time to hear all CDs in this box. Each piece requires attentive listening, and that means I want to make time for it, shut off any other electronic device, particularly the phone, so as to pay attention to the treasures unfolding in front of my ears and soul. I have listened to the first few discs, or to parts thereof, before bedtime, to "let the soul swing" ("die Seele baeumeln lassen", as the German saying goes). Hardly a more apt way to end the day.
