This is a good short history of the Abbey, and Richard Jenkyns does an excellent job of presenting 900 years of history in an accessible way and very readable. This seems to be a republishing of the same book with a revised title, new cover and original content. I found it a little troublesome that there are quite a few literal errors ( spelling mistakes ) which have crept in since the earlier edition.
Overall this is an excellent account which covers early medieval beginnings and the Abbeys life as a monastery with detail of its story through subsequent reigns, the passion and devotion of many people high and low, notably Henry VII, Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmore, through periods of building and restoration and as national monument and 'royal peculiar' answerable only to the monarch.
A story of religious devotion, mighty architecture and royal pomp.
