Biography

Biography by Heather Phares

In the tradition of British and Irish boy bands like Take That and Boyzone comes Dublin's Westlife. The group's first single, 1999's "Flying Without Wings," entered the U.K. charts at number one, a feat they replicated with "Seasons in the Sun" and "Swear It Again" in 2000. Their self-titled debut album met with ... Read more in Amazon's Westlife Store

Includes Four Extra Tracks. Irish Quintet Managed by Boyzones Ronan Keating have Made Chart History by Becoming the First Boy Band to have their First Two Singles Enter the UK Charts at No.1.

Amazon.co.uk

Amidst the denizens of fabricated boy bands, Westlife's debut comes as an unexpected gem. With a strong management team behind them--courtesy of Boyzone's own Ronan Keating--Westlife became the first Irish boy band to top the charts with their first three singles. "Swear it Again", the album's opener, is reminiscent of 1970s American balladeers Chicago, but their weak cover of Abba's "I Have A Dream" is a welcome omission. Instead, we're treated to a fantastic reworking of funk metal outfit Extreme's "More Than Words"; singer Bryan's plaintive vocal make it a superb choice. With producers Steve Mac and Pete Waterman in charge, as well as perfect string arrangements and surprisingly thoughtful lyrics, Westlife puts these boys in place to inherit Boyzone's pop crown. --Shanthi Sivanesan

For all you people who are thinking of buying this don't think just do it. Its the best album I have ever heard and I know that the guys are just going to get better and better. I love all the songs on this album and have listened to it a lot of times. I think soon whenever you say 'boybands' every one is just going to think of Westlife cause they're gonna be massive.
And just to comment on Marks amazing preformance, no matter what anyone will say in the furture - that guys got talent! He delivers a wonderful performance especially on 'Flying without Wings' and is one of the strongest voices I have ever heard.
All in all - this is the best, well done to them.

Westlife are a very strong group with fantastic voices and this album only goes to prove that. My favourite song is "Miss You" which is number 11 on the album but all of the tracks are brilliant. With a lot of albums you find yourself listening to the singles they have released but with this album all of the songs are fantastic and it hasn't been off my stereo since i bought it on the day it came out! The boys are gorgeous and there are some lovely pictures of them!

The first four tracks were all released as singles and all four became UK number one hits. Seasons in the sun, the flip side of I have a dream, was also released as a single that made number one, and was listed as a double A-side. Of the two tracks, only Seasons in the sun is featured here. That song originated as the French song Le moribund, written by Jacques Brel, who was actually Belgian. Rod McKuen translated it into English, in which language it has been covered many times. I have an excellent sixties folk version by the Kingston Trio, but the most famous version is by Terry Jacks, who had a UK number one with it in 1974.

The other songs all appear to be originals, but it's hard to pick favourites. A lot of people thought in the beginning that Westlife's career might not last very long, but they've had more than a decade together. Sadly, it now seems that they are to split up, but nothing lasts forever.

This CD was great! I really liked the songs 'Swear it again' 'Flying without wings' 'No no' 'A fool again' 'What I want is what I've got' and many many more! Westlife really inspired me with this album because it's all dance music and only a couple of slow songs. That's what I like about westlife, they don't have screaming air guitars in the backround but it's not like just the piano playing. It's right in the middle and that's why I like it. westlife isn't a group that everyone will like. Most people like plain out rock and that is not westlife the least bit. But I don't like flat out rock and I'm sticking with westlife. I enjoy their music and I hope they have a fun time making it.

these Irish wonders are giving boyzone a run for there money,(and winning) these lads have true talent, shane and mark both power through the album. the one bad point of the album is the sad and moody songs, this makes westlife sound like they need some happy pills fast! the album could of been much better with more up beet happy songs! still most of the songs are truelly wonderfull, tracks 5,6,8,15,16,17 are the best. but the best is 16! my top tip for the sexy irish lads is, if they want to choses a song to break USA use track 15! all together i love the album!

Boy band albums tend to have four or five strong songs on them as single material, with the other tracks simply making up the numbers. This one is different, in that everyone involved has actually put some real effort in to make a record you can listen to all the way through. The fact that it has 17 tracks is a good omen: why have so many (you can get away with 10) if they're not worth including?
OK, so lyrically the album isn't up to much, with only the closing 'Can't lose what you never had' straying far from cliche, but it's the tunes that count on albums like these and boy, what tunes! 'If I Let You Go', 'Fool Again', 'Change the World' and 'What I Want is What I've Got' are arguably the strongest, but there just isn't a duff track here. The world's finest pop writers have been drafted in and deliver a masterclass in formula songwriting, using the band's fine voices and pushing all the right buttons (who's not a sucker for those soaring key changes?). A lesson to bands who get all 'mature' and insist on contributing to the songwriting (eg the latest Steps effort): leave it to Topham and Twigg, Max Martin and those Scandinavian guys! These lot have something approaching genius in what they do...

This ia a really good album with a variety of great different songs that everyone will love. My favourite is track 17- You can't lose what you've never had. It's a great song sung by all 5 sexy lads and I hope them and their music are around for a very long time to come and I wish them the best of luck for the future and think that they truly deserve their success. well done lads from every Westlife fan in the world!

I'm from the Us and I have the U.S version of this album. This is one of the very few cds that's inside my CD player 24 hours a day. When I firs heard the song "Swear It Again" I fell in love with the band. "Miss you" is a song that struck me in my heart when I was going through a tough time with a friend of mine. I definitely sggest this cd to anyone who loves ballads.
