I'm no authority on this type of music and it's range, but it seems to me that a fair part of it is at the very least on the extreme fringes of what I consider western swing. That being said, it's generally interesting, but I think those buying this disc based on the premise of the title that it is '..the absolutely essential..' western swing will be sadly disappointed. I suggest you pay more and seek out 'Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys: The Golden Years of Western Swing' which to my mind delivers the goods.

Excellent box set of very well chosen recordings of great artists and at a fantastic price for a 3 cd collection. Delivery was good and would recommend this set to anyone thinking of starting a Western Swing collection.

Such Compilations MUST Have Background Details & Discographies 23 July 2011
By AvidOldiesCollector - Published on Amazon.com
You may have arrived at this page by searching under "western swing" or perhaps one of the song titles. If that's the case you are likely familiar with the sub-genre of music that emerged in the late 1920s, primarily in Texas, Oklahoma and California, essentially a fusion of hillbilly (or cowboy), traditional folk, Dixieland Jazz, and Blues with the popular big bands even then themselves evolving into Swing.

If, however, you are merely curious about old-time Western Swing, perhaps because you're a fan of contemporary groups such as Asleep At The Wheel, the lack of artist information above makes this a pig-in-a-poke purchase. Indeed, even if you know most of the songs you'd be rightly wondering who the performers are, especially since many were recorded by several of the prominent Western Swing groups at that time. So I have re-listed the contents here, showing the artist for each:

Disc 1: Lil Liza Jane - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; Pussy Pussy Pussy - The Light Crust Doughboys; Brownie's-Stomp - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies; Worried Mind - Ted Daffan's Texans; Drink The Barrel Dry - Bill Boyd & His Cowboy Ramblers; New San Antonio Rose - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; Shame On You - Spade Cooley & His Orch; I Can't Dance (If I Got Ants In My Pants) - Roy Newman, Good Gracious Gracie - The Light Crust Doughboys; I Want My Rib - Hank Penny; Wine, women And Song - Al Dexter & His Troopers; Sweet Jennie Lee - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies; Sally's Got A Wooden Leg - Sons Of The West; Red's Tight Like That - The Tune Wranglers; Cotton eyes Joe - Adolph Hofner & His San Antonians; Ida Red Likes The Boogie - Bob Wills & His Texas Plays; I Got Texas In My Soul - Texas Williams & His Western Caravan; What's The Matter With Deep Elem? - The Sunshine Boys; Detour - Spade Cooley & His Orch; Crafton Blues - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies

Disc 2: Steel Guitar Rag - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; Blue Guitars - The Light Crust Doughboys; Down By The O-H-I-O - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies; Blue Steel Blues - Ted Daffan's Texans; Boyd's Blues - Bill Boyd & His Cowboy Ramblers; I've Taken All I'm Gonna Take From You - Spade Cooley & His Orch; Steel Guitar Stomp - Hank Penny; Stay A Little Longer - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; Honey, Do You Think It's Wrong? - Al Dexter & His Troopers; Buster's Crawdad Song - The Tune Wranglers; St. Louis Blues - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies; Corrine, Corrina - Cliff Bruner's Texas Wanderers; Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (That Cigarette) - Tex Williams & His Western Caravan; Mean Mean Mama (From Meana) - The Light Crust Cowboys; Chinese Honeymoon - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies; Oh Susannah - Sons Of The West; Crazy `Cause I Love You - Spade Cooley & His Orch; New Spanish Two-Step - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; She's Doggin' Me - Bill Boyd & His Cowboy Ramblers; Texas Sand - The Tune Wranglers [20]

Disc 3: Faded Love - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; Let's Make Believe We're Sweethearts - The Light Crust Doughboys; Kelly Swing - Cliff Bruner & His Boys; Take It Away, Leon - Leon McAuliffe; Truck Driver's Blues - Cliff Bruner & His Boys; Who's Sorry Now - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies; Texas Playboy Rag - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; A Pair Of Broken Hearts - Spade Cooley & His Orch; Pistol Packin' Mama - Al Dexter & His Troopers; Panhandle rag - Sons Of The West; El Rancho Grande - The Tune Wranglers; Just Once Too Often - The Light Crust Doughboys; Bubble In My Beer - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; This Side Of Town - Leon McAuliffe; Fan It - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies; Nancy Jane - Tommy Duncan; Brain Cloudy Blues - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys; It Ain't Far To The Bar - Johnny Tyler; You Can't Break My Heart - Spade Cooley & His Orch; Mama Don't Like No Music - Roy Newman

The sound quality is quite good, but don't look for anything in the way of background information or discography, omissions which resulted in 2 stars being deducted since any such compilation of this magnitude absolutely must show such information to be a viable purchase (I have taken the liberty of providing that information in the Comments below - at least where I know the details).

Fun tunes, poor packaging 11 Jan. 2013
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
As the other reviewer noted, there is an odd, if not disturbing, absence of any sort of booklet or liner notes to accompany this otherwise interesting compilation of classic Western Swing tunes from the 1930s, 40s & 50s. They do give you song times and songwriting credits for each tune, but that's it in the way of any details. But there's nothing to complain about when it comes the music itself; this is fun, rambunctious stuff. Each of the three discs has 20 tracks. Most Western Swing fans have perhaps heard some, if not most, of these tunes already, and many have appeared on other compilations. Nevertheless, it's nice to have so many good tunes in one package and it's good value for the money. This set also serves as a nice intro for those wanting to wade in deeper and immerse themselves in this glorious music.

Somewhat wanting 26 Sept. 2013

The music in this three-CD collection is tremendous. What is very disturbing is the lack of any liner notes or booklet. If you want just the music, this collection is fine. If, however, you want a full discography with session dates and catalog numbers, then this collection is less than stellar. Yes, I can likely find most of that information online; I'm accustomed to digging for those details. But the lack of such information in this set means I'll likely never buy another CD set from Big3 Records again.
