I bought this and the companion volume Southern National hoping that they would give me a flavour of what bus travel was like in a part of the country with which I am not familiar. I have to say that I was most disappointed with both books. Colin Morris seems to have based his writing on directors' meeting reports and board room minutes. In other words there is much factual reporting on the company - which smaller companies they took over and such like. Unfortunately, for those like myself, who may be wanting to know what operating a bus service in the depths of the West Country was like - the fishing villages, the holiday resorts, the vehicles (Lodekkas etc) and such like you must look elsewhere.
The volumes are handsomely presented but there is no life to them. I felt as if I knew no more about bus life in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall after I had read them as I already knew before - which was nothing. I could have been reading about a faceless, nameless bus company instead of a living, vibrant one operating in unique conditions.
