Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

With his other band, the Coal Porters, switched away from jangly Byrds-meet-Springsteen rock onto a power-bluegrass tip, former Long Ryder Sid Griffin hangs a heavy left and explores the possibilities of dragging the folk-rock singer-songwriter into the present day. The shadow of Beck is, inevitably, never far from any venture that attempts to fuse dance beats and samples with laid-back acoustic rock, but Griffin's edge comes from his heavily country leanings, so while the dance beats work their magic on the feet, there tend to be steel guitars soaring skywards on top. Happily, all of this seems to have coincided with Griffin and song-writing partner Pat McGarvey hitting the top of their form with songs like "10-4", "Love You Down" and "Carousel Days" easily among their best work ever. For the cognoscenti, there is even an excellent previously unrecorded Gene Clark song, and a guest slot by Soft Boy Robyn Hitchcock to spice things up a little further, but the real reason to check this one out is simple: Sid Griffin has never sounded this good before. --Johnny Black

Oxford American

Infuses the mountain ballad tradition with the feverish inspiration of Bob Dylan and the Beats.

The Amazon.co.uk review above says it all - a stunning blend of beats, samples and Americana, and it really works. Sid Griffin is a god and this is his best work since the Long Ryders. If Gram Parsons was still around to hear this he'd surely approve. I paid ninety-nine Earth pence for a pre-loved copy and I can't believe my good fortune. Buy this album at all costs.
