This is a fantastic high performance drive and quite frankly until ssd's come down in price and their lifespan increases I will be sticking with these.
There are three 200GB platters spinning at 10,000rpm with a 32MB cache. Western Digital has used the smaller 2.5in size of drive to reduce overall platter size and the read/write head movement required and thus increase the access speed. The drive itself is slightly taller than a normal 2.5in laptop hard disk though (so you can't fit it into a netbook or typical laptop). Due to the increased heat generated by the 10,000rpm motor, the disk is fitted into a 3.5in heat sink casing to provide sufficient cooling.
The heat sink casing really benefitted from my front intake fans on my Antec 300 reducing its temperature from an idle temp of high 30's to low 30's.
While the VelociRaptor 600GB is a very fast hard disk, and grants obvious performance benefits over other hard disk drives, however don't expect it to match the near-instant responsiveness and feeling of using an SSD as a boot disk. However in comparison to other hard disks such as the WD caviar black I used to have it is about 10% faster in everyday use. They are also a lot quieter than their predecessors and use a newer sata interface to boost speeds.
A Raptor will be my first choice for a while to come yet until SSD's fall in price, increase in capacity and issues such as trim support and longevity are properly resolved.
Western Digital also provide some nice software tools on their website including Acronis which makes replacing a system disk far less painful. You literally use the software to clone your old drive to this one and then change the new drive to your boot drive and your done!
