Product Description

Product Description

WD's My Book Studio is the high performance, premium design external hard drive for your Mac backup and storage needs.

Heat-dissipating, aluminium enclosure

Encased in a streamlined aluminium enclosure that remains cool to the touch, this drive complements your Mac, and as always, takes up minimal space on your desk. The book-like design allows two or more My Book drives to nestle neatly together like volumes on a shelf.

Premium performance

Save and access data at top speeds with the dual high-performance FireWire 800 interface. Also includes FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 interface for maximum flexibility.

Optional WD Smartware backup software

Visual backup software and drive management control center. Install all components, some or none. It's up to you.

Formatted HFS+ Journaled

Works out of the box, with your Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard system.  Can easily be reformatted to work with Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.

Password protection

Gain peace of mind knowing that your data is protected from unauthorised access or theft with password protection and hardware-based encryption. (Requires WD SmartWare software)

Power miser

My Book external drives are designed to save energy. WD GreenPower Technology lowers internal drive power consumption by up to 30%, a sleep mode reduces power during idle times, and a power-saving feature turns the drive on and off with your computer.

Runs cool

The drive is designed to run cool without a fan. Lower operating temperatures extend the life of the drive and improve data reliability, while the fan-less design reduces noise output.

We know a hard disk is not to be 100% trusted right from its first day of use, but if I have some (bad) updates (hope not) in the future, I'll let you know. Oh heck I will :D

Nah, let's hope everything turns out perfect as my other drives so far. Well, this disk has arrived really quick (a 10 to Amazon.co.uk! You take more to deliver books than digital-life stuff, and books were your origing, incredible!), very well packed and protected, and its box was perfect. Opened it, ran a quick hardware test, no errors found.

Plugged it in on my Mac mini and the Time Machine copy I so urgently needed to make has finished in less than 20 minutes I guess. Copied some files (my iPhoto Library) and 3.5GB went to this Hard Drive in 1min16.8sec!

Starts slowly, but then after 20 seconds it accelerates at an incredible rate and the average is 45.5 MegaBytes per second (not Megabits. MegaBytes). With larger files the speed would be felt more. Just for you to compare, I'm not able to go over 30 MB/s through USB 3.0 on a PC. FW800 is still the reigning champion, only beaten by the more expensive eSata and (way more exp but very constant in speed) Thunderbolt disks.

Besides, comparing prices, you can choose to buy a 4GB Thunderbolt heavy-and-very-thick disk for 500 pounds, or two 2GB FW800 slim (hmm... better "not-so-thick" or "half-the-width") disks for 300 pounds. In the near future things will change and the constant speed will definitely weight for the newer technology.

But if you need a not-so-expensive, huge-capacity, fast and well-designed disk, this FW800 Western Digital will fit your dreams. The aluminum case has impressed me (Western Digital USB disks and some old FW400 usually come in a plastic case). Cables give the feeling of very good quality (cables are one FW800 and one USB 2.0 universal, both in white. I'll use the USB cable for other devices).

And the speed... oh the constant speed that USB will never reach, being 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 or whatever .0 they invent. Nowadays USB technology is not close to eSata, Thunderbolt or Firewire.

I surely recommend it to everyone. HOWEVER, it's a hard disk, and we should all know that these babies come with the real thing inside it. The real quality can only be measured with time: if your data is safe for years, then it's a great disk. Iomega and WD haven't given me problems in the last few years, but two Seagate SATA disks have, so if they come with this brand, I'll not be able to trust the product 100%. It's like buying any other electronic product, really. You may be lucky or not.

Good news is that with Western Digital so far, I have been lucky. And considering the product they offer... Yes, I recommend it. But never keep your precious data in only one backup disk!!!! Minimum two, separated. If one fails, you still have time to blame it and precious information to recover!

WD My Book Studio 2TB 5 April 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I purchased this item on the 23/01/12 and set it up and it worked perfectly well. I then went abroad for six weeks which meant the unit was not in use, when I returned and switched it on it would not power up. I got in contact with the seller who basically palmed me off and told me to get in touch with the manufacturers. I sent WD an e mail stating my problem and after two weeks I am still waiting for a reply from them. I also phoned their support in Holland and was told that they would send me a new power unit, I am still waiting for it. My next step is to get in touch with Amazon. Be wary if you intend to purchase one of these because if something goes wrong with it you will face an uphill struggle to get it sorted.
