The world's most popular portable drive is now smaller than ever. And it's smarter than ever with automatic, continuous backup software and password protection.
I'm sorry to ay that this drive is not something to go for. Recently it has been re-cased and sadly to its detriment. The USB connector on the drive is now so poor that unless it stays in exactly the right position for the duration of its use, the connection will become unstable and you may lose data or risk corruption.
I have purchased 6 of these drives previously (before the form factor change) and they were great - and highly recommended. Now I am forced to go elsewhere.
I have purchased a number of Western Digital Passport drives over the last year and the quality has become so bad this will be the last one. There are two areas of concern.
1) The drive now has a micro USB port rather than a mini USB port. The connection to this port is so loose that the cable drops out if the drive is moved whilst it is plugged in. I have checked with other models and this seem to be a design issue with all new models.
2) The drive has WD SmartWare built into the firmware of the drive. There is no way to remove this software, the only option you have is to disable it from the operating system on each machine you use it on. WD needs to supply a method of removing this virus / trojan vector from their drives.
Come on WD don't try and lower the cost of manufacturing to the detriment of quality.
I've read many people complaining that the Micro USB port is not held securely in place. If you plug in the Micro USB cable to the HDD you have to push it on securely. The first contact is loose but then you push over the locking position and the cable is held firmly in place. I wonder if the other reviewers just didn't push this on far enough. This seems very good value for the design.
