4.0 out of 5 stars Good at what it does 27 Feb 2011
By Bill Shakespeare VINE™ VOICE
Size Name:2TB|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is Western Digital's no frills media player with built in hard drive. Out of the box I discovered this needed firmware updating from the website because it wouldn't automatically identify or remember HDMI settings after powering off and I was using this with an HDMI cable. It seemed to default to AV composite output regardless. Firmware fixed this of course and it now works great. Quality of the playback of files is good, assuming the quality of your files is good naturally. As mentioned in one of the other reviews, it's best to use folders and sub folders with your media as it will make managing everything easier. For example have a Movie folder and then sub category folders by genre.

I'm very pleased with this device because 2TB is a lot of storage space if you have lots of DivX,xvid or any other MPEG4 variant files, all in a one solution box that plugs into a TV and lets you play them. The remote is small but functional and I quite like it. So yes I would recommend this device which is fairly simple to operate. Just be aware that you may have to update firmware, which means downloading the firmware from the website, putting it onto a USB stick (or external HDD USB) plugging it into the Elements Play Drive, where it will automatically identify and ask if you want to update. I didn't give a final star for the product because it comes with no AV composite cable or HDMI in the box, just the mains plug and a short USB to connect with a PC.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great bit of kit. 18 Nov 2010
By Flickering Ember TOP 500 REVIEWER
Size Name:1TB|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
As with other reviewers, I received this with only a 2-pin Asian adapter and had to buy a suitable UK plug. I also bought a AmazonBasics 2M Dual-Shielded High Speed HDMI Cable [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] to link it up to my TV set. I found the process of transferring files onto it as simple as it is with any of my hard drives. For the purposes of getting a full picture of its functionality, I chose a selection of different media formats to use with it and there were no problems with any of them.

The lack of thumbnails was pretty much the only fault I can find with it; I found the process of looking through and searching for content generally rather more frustrating than need be, although I did enjoy making slide shows and viewing my content on a big screen from the comfort of a sofa rather than huddled over a 15 inch laptop screen on my desk.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Hit and Miss 16 Sep 2011
By A. Marczak TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Size Name:1TB|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I've had this for several months, and I have to say that the jury is still out. While it says it can cope with almost every video format under the sun, I have found it struggling with all kinds of video formats that I would expect to work, MOV, M2TS, WMV. That said, when it works it's excellent, the video quality over HDMI is really good, although you'll need your own cables, and the menu format is a bit cool, but a bit strange.

It also shows your pictures, which could be useful for slideshows or background screen savers.

So in short, when it works, it's excellent, but when it doesn't, it's infuriating.
