Manufacturer's Description

WD Elements Desktop External Drive - simply affordable

Western Digital's WD Elements Desktop USB 2.0 external hard drives are the right answer for simple, reliable add-on storage. Simply plug one into a USB port and start saving your photos, music, video, and files. Designed with the same commitment to quality that made WD external drives the number one selling drives in the world, the WD Elements comes with plug-and-play simplicity, meaning you just have to connect the power and plug it into a USB port to instantly add more storage to your computer.

Designed to save power

The WD Elements Desktop turns on and off with your computer and enters idle mode when not in use - it also utilises a WD drive with power-saving WD GreenPower Technology and an EnergyStar compliant power supply. Environmental sustainability is important to us at Western Digital. One of the best ways we can make a positive impact on the environment is to offer products that consume less electricity. To that end, WD has designed eco-friendly hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology for WD desktop, enterprise, CE and external hard drive products.

Based on extensive customer input toward supporting ENERGY STAR 4.0 compliance and incorporating the latest in engineering technology, we developed this platform to bring more energy efficient hard drive options to our customers.

As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. Currently available 1 TB hard drives have a typical power consumption rating greater than 13.5 watts. WD has designed the first 3.5-inch hard drives that deliver power savings as the primary attribute. IntelliPower and IntelliPark are two examples of technologies that enable the WD GreenPower Technology platform.

GreenPower technology from Western Digital
GreenPower technology is designed with the environment in mind.
IntelliPower

A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. For each drive model, WD may use a different, invariable RPM.

Drives featuring WD GreenPower Technology consume less current during start up, allowing more drives to spin up simultaneously resulting in faster system readiness - a big plus for enterprise customers.

IntelliPark

IntelliPark delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading recording heads during idle periods to reduce aerodynamic drag, and disengages read/write channel electronics.

Earth-friendly packaging

Packaged in minimised, eco-friendly, recyclable packaging made from recycled materials, the WD Elements Desktop is pre-formatted for PCs. Designed for use with Windows-based computers, it can also be easily reformatted for use with Macs.

For additional storage capacity, check out the WD Elements Desktop 1.5TB.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet, cool and unobtrusive, 22 Nov 2009

This review is from: Western Digital Elements 1TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive - Black (Personal Computers)
I bought this hard disk primarily for use with Apple Time Machine from two Mac laptops - a Macbook and a Macbook Pro. The drive comes formatted for Windows but a reformat only took a few seconds. Usable space on the drive is 931.5GB - I have the drive partitioned, 600GB for Time Machine and 330GB for general usage.

The drive is very smart, with a textured top and glossy sides and has rubber feet. Both connectors (power and usb) are at the back, next to a white activity light, so there's nothing flashing at the front. The power lead is fairly compact (compared to my Lacie FA Porsche drive), with the transformer built in to the plug rather than halfway along the lead. Even the USB cable is well designed, with moulded easy-grip ends.

The drive is almost completely silent and runs very cool despite having no fan. I've probably moved about 1TB on and off it over the last 24 hours and it's never even been warm. Transfer speeds seem to be around 1GB/minute for both large files (a 200GB SuperDuper sparseimage) and many small files (my 50GB iTunes library), which is about standard for a USB hard disk as far as other reviews say. This equates to about 130Mb/s - USB is apparently capable of 480Mb/s, but I've never seen those speeds.

The drive has a two year warranty in the UK/Europe, which I think is the same as other drives in the WD range (although the My Book Elite has 3 years).

All in, for a budget external drive this is a great buy with solid build and performance to match any decent USB drive.

I Have 3 of the previous model and they have not been a problem once - So I picked up one of these new version's and it worked out the box and so far it's been 100% reliable and I'm very happy with it. If you're after some cheap extra storage then I would recommend this Drive - 1TB is more than enough for 90% of everyday users

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent., 21 July 2010

As I've come to expect from WD, these drives are excellent, I have two 2TB ones (this new model) and two 1TB ones (the old 'elements' model that was longer with the rubber edges on back and front).

Was a big fan of the older model of 'elements' drives, and so was concerned they had tried to profitize and so made a cheaper more tacky 'elements' model. Anyway, its not the case, solid as a rock, reliable, quiet, quality feel, and looks better too. Buy them now!
