Product Description

WD Elements Portable – simply affordable, easily portable
The WD Elements Portable is a simple, high quality portable drive that is light and easy to carry - simply plug it in to any USB port and start saving your photos, music, video, and files. Designed with the same commitment to quality that made WD external drives the number one drives in the world, just plug it into a USB port and you are ready to go – perfect for data storage and transfer when on the go.

USB powered with a compact design
Powered directly through the USB cable the WD Elements Portable require no power adapter, adding to the ease with which they can be transported and meaning your data transfer is a quick and hassle-free experience. Should your computer be one of the few which limits power to the USB port, an optional cable is available (sold separately).

USB 2.0 is the industry standard peripheral connection for most Windows-based computers. This connection transfers data at a maximum rate of 480 Mb/s. Sustained data transfer rates, usually from 10 to 30 MB/s, vary depending on many factors including the type of device, data being transferred, and computer system speed. If your USB port is an earlier version, USB 1.0 or 1.1, you can use a USB 2.0 hard drive, but transfer rates default to the slowest version. If you don’t know the version of your computer’s USB ports, refer to your computer documentation or contact the manufacturer.

Weighing only a few ounces, this small drive will fit easily into a pocket or purse, allowing you to effortlessly transport all your data when on the go. Pre-formatted for use with Windows-based computers the Elements Portable drive can be easily re-formatted for use with Macs.

Features IntelliPark as part of WD's GreenPower Technology
IntelliPark helps lower power consumption - part
of WD's GreenPower Technology.

Environmental sustainability is important to us at Western Digital. One of the best ways we can make a positive impact on the environment is to offer products that consume less electricity. To that end, WD has designed eco-friendly hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology for WD desktop, enterprise, CE and external hard drive products.

Based on extensive customer input toward supporting ENERGY STAR 4.0 compliance and incorporating the latest in engineering technology we developed this platform to bring more energy efficient hard drive options to our customers.

As hard drive capacities increase, the power required to run those drives increases as well. Currently available 1 TB hard drives have a typical power consumption rating greater than 13.5 watts. WD has designed the first 3.5-inch hard drives that deliver power savings as the primary attribute. IntelliPower and IntelliPark are two examples of technologies that enable the WD GreenPower Technology platform.

IntelliPower
A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate, and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance. For each drive model, WD may use a different, invariable RPM.

Drives featuring WD GreenPower Technology consume less current during start up allowing more drives to spin up simultaneously resulting in faster system readiness which is a big plus for enterprise customers.

IntelliPark
Delivers lower power consumption by automatically unloading recording heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag, and disengages read/write channel electronics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, good value, practically silent 12 Dec 2009
I chose this product as I've had good experiences with similar WD drives used at my work, and unlike many other similar drives it stops spinning automatically after a few minutes of idle time. There is a slight delay the first time you try and use it after this as it spins back up, but for my purposes the auto-spin-down is a great feature - I have the drive permanently connected to a Marvell SheevaPlug which I use for automatic network backups.

Another plus point is that the drive is practically silent when in use - the first time I used it I had to pick it up and feel the vibration to convince myself that it was actually spinning! If you're looking for a drive to use in a quiet room this is definitely one to consider.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great with my Mac 21 Dec 2009
Verified Purchase
Very quiet, simple, sturdy. I much prefer it's matt finish to the finger print magnet My Passport 'Essential' line. It also has a decently mounted micro USB port (recessed), a proper drive light (pleasing white LED from deep within) and an efficient auto spin down.

No problems when using it in Mac OS X(Leopard), I run a partition for my Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro off with space leftover for another partition for general stuff. All easily setup in minutes from Disk Utility.

I'm well pleased with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Quality and Value 6 Dec 2009
By JC
I decided to choose the "Elements" over "My Essential passport" due to the 20 price difference. The size was almost the same and as I am keeping it inside a CaseLogic carry case, I can't see it most of the time anyway. Unfortunately, I have to remove it slightly so that I don't put strain on the mini-USB connector, but that's no hardship. It is of good quality and seems sturdy. I like the operating light to give an indication of activity, which I read is not on the newer version. Well happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars High quality hard drive. 24 Mar 2010
Am extremely impressed with this.
Good points:
a) It transfers data very quickly (up to 14MB/second).
b) It's pretty much silent.
c) It's sturdy - I dropped it accidentally onto a wooden floor from chest height and no problems at all.
d) It doesn't need an external power supply, just plug it in to the computer and good to go.
e) It's light, fits in my pocket and looks good.

Bad points:
Can't think of any!

Nb/ I'm on Vista, so I can't comment on Windows 7 compatibility.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine with Windows 7 20 Mar 2010
Ignore the reviews that tell you this device has problems with Windows 7 because that's nonsense. It's just a USB 2 storage device so there's no reason why it wouldn't work with Win7, and I'm using it right now on my Win7 Home Premium laptop. I've used it on a Windows XP netbook too. Simples!

First impressions after a few hours are that this is a lovely bit of kit. Really small, silent, cool running. Can't think of any negatives at all.

I have an older 160Gb WD passport drive which won't work on my Dell laptop without a double-headed cable. This newer 500Gb Elements model works without any problems: no need for double-headed USB cable and works on every PC I have tried. This drive may not have the latest styling but it has been faultless for the three months that I have had it and it has had plenty of travel and use in that time. No pre-installed software to fight with, just a plain vanilla drive. I would recommend this to anyone. If you want a portable drive, buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked Great Until It Didn't 25 Feb 2012
By SMG
Verified Purchase
I'd been very pleased with this external hard drive until it died just over a year after I bought it. It hasn't had a lot of use and has been stored in a hard case in my laptop bag, hasn't been dropped or anything. For no apparent reason it can't be seen any more by a PC or laptop. The light is on and I can hear the disk spinning. I wasn't happy to go to Western Digital's site and discover that there is no guarantee on this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars WD Elements 500GB 2.5" portable drive 12 Sep 2011
By Zain
Verified Purchase
I have owned this drive now for nearly 2 years and have had no problems what so ever. I have continuously been copying 200-400GB worth of data to and from the usb HD and it is incredibly fast and not once has it dropped - Be aware that i was going for the MyPassport series but they are more expensive & they have a special type microusb cable which is NOT universal (one of my friends has bought the 1TB & 2TB My Passport usb HD and is constantly gets dropouts - So this put me of but then this WD HD has proven to be a great product and has not given me any problems till date - does exactly what it say on the tin. Bottom line its

1) Cheaper than convential 3.5" USB HD
2) requires no power supply
3) Nice and small fits nicely in my laptop case
4) Very Quiet - seriously its really quiet
5) Have dropped a few times on carpet and no damager encountered - so robust
6) Uses universal microusb cable - like it should
7) No droppage of connection during data transfer - i did 200-400GB 6 0r 7 times
