This drive is the nuts i have never bought a WD drive that has not not worked and this one rock's it is even faster than the old Elements drives at 7,200 which is great.

Most of my files are over 4 gig so I needed to format to NTSC which took about 2 minutes to do.

Quick set up, easy to use and silent what more could you want from a drive?

Buy it now rather than other makes!!!!!

I am using this drive on a Power Mac G5 Quad with OSX10.5.8. after much deliberation about brands i chose this WD drive. previously i have always bought Seagate, but after reading about so many potential issues with recent models, i didnt want to risk it, so i thought i woulds try something else. shame on you seagate, you lost the respect!
Firstly, i would say the design is nice and discreet, and doesn't take up too much space, the rubber corners help to cushion is and lift it off the surface to allow air to circulate and cool it too. though am not sure hwo well they will stack with the rubber, if i bought any more. The drive sleeps nicely when the mac is put to sleep or shut down whilst plugged into the mac, which incidentally my seagate 1.5tb external doesn't manage to power down when the mac is switched off (have to unplug it each time- annoying). so well done WD.
the only slight initial snag, not biggi though. when i first plugged it in, normally with new drives osx asks you to format the drive, as they come formatted to windows pc as default. but with this one, it appeared on the desktop straight away. it shows as some MS-DOS fat32 format (who comes up with these names?), which seems to work with osx. its tempting just to start using the drive in this format as it works initially, but, dont do it! on reading up on this, it seems that it is highly not recommended. its some sort of halfway house format that works with mac & PC, but using it is risky to use. however, when i went to format the HDD (as i would normally with a new HDD), using OSX built in Disc Utility, i normally go to the "Erase" tab, and format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". this would not work though, so back to the WD support site. it transpires you can only format it using the "Partition" Tab. i don't normally partition my HDs, as i like to see everything all my files in one go. but you just need to select 1 Partition, or however many you would like and click apply. it worked fine then.
i am currently loading up all my data onto the drive from other drives (18HRs for 700GB worth, crikey) and seems to be taking the data fine. speed wise seems pretty much average for these large drives. anyhow, its good enough for what i have in mind for it, and the price is a bargain for a big brand, big GB drive. if it works out in the long run, i'd be tempted to get another next year sometime.

i bought this drive on the back of the recommendation of the gentleman above

it is a fantastic drive - wd are the best

although the guy above is a bit biased and also is addicted to downloading - so we have to be carefull with his reviews - especially the one he did on Gay Pride Rainbow Flag 5'x3' by 1000 Flags .

    thx
