My Book World Edition Home Network Storage
With the My Book World Edition it's easy to set up a central storage location in your home that is compatible with both Mac and Windows files - simply connect the drive to your network router and you’re up and running in just a few minutes. Using the included back up software you can protect your family’s PCs with automatic and continuous backup plans, store all your digital media in one central location so everyone in the family can have access to it and securely access your files from anywhere and at any time with remote access technology.

Keep your family’s data safe
If you’re the family Chief Technology Officer, you understand the importance of backing up photos, music, video and all the other files that are so important to your family, right? Maybe you’re the only one in the house that gets it, but now you won't have to nag the rest of the family to back up, or chase down their computers to do it yourself. In just a few simple steps you can set up automatic and continuous back up to the World Edition drive for all your family’s computers.

Keep the files on your laptop backed up without even thinking about it
You’ve been out at the coffee shop writing your novel and now you’re home and you know you should back up your work. Sigh. But, with the My Book World Edition drive it’s no longer a chore, in fact, it’s easy. Just turn on your laptop and log into the home network. That’s it. Your files will be backed up automatically. It’s not hard to set it up, and once you’re done it’s always automatic and you can stop thinking about it.

Play music and video files on your TV
Your epic trip-to-Africa movie is here on the computer in the den. Your big, beautiful new plasma TV is there in the family room. How do you get that movie from here to there? My Book World Edition can be your home's central media hub. From it you can stream photos, music, and videos to your home entertainment centre - all you need is the My Book World Edition drive and a digital media adapter or a game console like an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, and your masterpiece is there on the big screen.

High-speed data transfer and Gigabit
Ethernet in a stylish, small-footprint design.

Play all your iTunes music on any computer in the house
You use iTunes to manage your music and so does the rest of the family, so there are music files on all of your family’s computers. With the My Book World Edition drive, you can put all of that music in one place so that everyone can listen. Store all your family’s iTunes music on the drive, find the drive on any computer on the network, open iTunes, and, ta-da, there’s the music.

Get to your data no matter where you are
Imagine you’re out of town, interviewing for a new job. You need a new copy of your CV and it’s only on your home computer…which is turned off. Yikes. But you’re OK, because you stored the resume on your My Book World Edition drive. The drive is always on, and you can get to it through the Internet, any time, anywhere. Excellent! Now you can knock ‘em dead in the interview.

Automatic and continuous backup for all the computers on your network
Now you can easily back up data from all your home computers with the included continuous backup software. Set it and forget it; every time you save something it's instantly and automatically backed up. Plus, with simple file recovery, you can restore lost, damaged or older files back to their original location with a couple of clicks. Backup files are stored in the same file structure that you originally saved them, so it’s easy and intuitive to find files.

Stream movies and music to your TV
and access your data anytime, anywhere.

Stream digital media anywhere in your home
With a built-in media server for streaming music, photos and movies to any DLNA certified multimedia device such as Playstation 3, Xbox 360, wireless digital picture frames and connected audio receivers (DLNA 1.5 and UPnP certified) you can also centralise your music collection and stream to a Mac or Windows PC using iTunes software. My Book World Edition even uses cutting-edge technologies to deliver high performance read and write speeds that are ideal for the most demanding users, giving you best-in-class performance.

Easy to set up, easy to find on your network
Set up is a snap with the My Book World Edition; in just a few minutes you’re up and running. Mac and Windows Vista computers will automatically find your My Book drive in seconds, and our simple discovery software makes it easy to find the drive with Windows XP systems. MioNet remote access technology also makes it easy for you to securely share photos and documents with friends and family, while the USB 2.0 utility port allows you to turn any USB drive into an instant network drive or extra capacity for your World Edition.

Cooler, quieter and eco-friendly
Equipped with WD drives using WD GreenPower technology, this system consumes significantly less power and delivers performance on par with power hungry network storage devices using 7200 RPM hard drives. You can see at a glance how much space is available on your drive via the capacity gauge, and thanks to high-speed data transfer with Gigabit Ethernet, your Gigabit networking and transfer rates are up to five to six times faster than other standard 10/100 Ethernet network storage systems (this performance is comparable to USB 2.0 direct-attached storage. You results will vary based on the file size and format, settings, features, software and other factors).

For the same great features with added capacity, check out the My Book World Edition 2TB, or why not take a look at the My Book World Edition II range which offers the additional benefits of a user serviceable design and RAID enabled drive layout.

Impressed so far... 30 Mar 2009
I brought this after my previous lacie NAS drive failed after just 2 years. I was always happy with the Lacie but the backup software was useless, the media server and user interface quirky. And it became so noisy I had to turn it off and on all the time which defeated the object!

However with this Western Digital drive all that has changed. The first big plus point is its super silent, and drive access is so much faster than my last drive. Ok.. its not going to set the world on fire, it took a couple of hours to copy over around 20gb of music across my 54mbps wireless network, but once done I can browse the drive, view pictures etc.. so much quicker than my lacie. Using windows photo gallery I can view and load photos and its just a little bit slower than if they were on my laptop.

Setup was straightforward, the shares and media server is already setup and you can plug in, run the cd and go. My only tip would be to disable your anti-virus before running the discovery tool as it seems to block the software from seeing the drive. Once seen it maps the drive, configures other shares, installs the backup software, and allows you to setup the web access.

The backup software comes with five licences and works as you'd expect. It runs quietly in the background after the first backup and archives all the files you need in the event of a disaster.

I've tried the web access from another PC across the internet, and whilst it works and I can easily access and browse the drive. It took about 30 seconds to copy over a 4mb mp3 file which is acceptable for the odd file you need to grab when you're away from home, and getting a word or excel document would be loads quicker.

I've briefly tried the media server and my DMA recognised and played files with no hassles.

If you're considering this drive I'm happy to recommend it. There were loads of bad reviews for the previous My World model, but WD seem to have addressed the issues, and it gets the thumbs up from me!

    Pros:
    Super Silent
    Software does the trick
    Decent Access and write speed.
    Web Access does actually work.
Media Server is a doddle to get working

    Con's:
Its pricey against a normal usb drive (But once you've had a NAS style drive and used features like the media server you'll probably be glad you spent the extra)

This 1TB NAS device is good value and good looking. It is fairly easy to set up using the supplied software (on cdrom) which is slightly clunky. You must connect any additional USB storage devices AFTER the NAS is switched on and connected or your computer won't recognise it. The USB port is ONLY for external storage which is a shame as network printer support would have been great. Still, once you set up a Medio account - you can access your NAS (and any storage plugged into it) from anywhere in the world by simply logging into your account. Support for FTP is built in but unless you know exactly how to do this, you're much better off with the Medio account which is absolutely free except if you want to access a separate computer plugged into your network adapter. I've given it 4 stars only because of the slightly clunky software and lack of network printer support but in comparison with similarly priced drives this drive is by far the best - and Computer Shopper (Jun 09) agrees.

    Good Product 2 Aug 2009
WD My Book World World Edition is good back external storage device works in the back ground and is very quite. It took its time to back up the data that I have - 38GB. The unit worked easily when plugged in and connected to the wireless router with the provided cable.

The information in the printed booklet is limited and I still do not know why the white light in the front flashes when my computer is off. It would be better if it is supplied with more practical information for the customer to know more about the device. This however has not has effected the units performance.

It will only work with its own back up software. The remote access facility is free for a trail period and then one has to pay for it. In this day and age when one is on the move, it would have been more appealing to offer that service free packaged with the device.

Overall, I am pleased with it and would recommend it to others who like me are looking for a device that automatically backs up data wireless for you through your wireless router/modem.

pros: quite, good looking, does the job efficiently.
Cons: remote access is not free, slow, the power cable can disengage with minimal movement, does not work with other back up software.

I hope this review is usefull.
