WD SmartWare update: We've been shipping our new My Book and My Passport drives with WD SmartWare software for a few months now. During that time we've been listening to our customers. As a result of the feedback, we've developed some improvements to the software. You can now hide the Virtual CD (VCD) if you wish, or exit WD SmartWare from the Windows system tray. If you prefer not to use WD SmartWare at all then we have enhanced the ability to opt-out.

USB cable connection: WD has increased the retention force specification on all our Micro USB cables and we are offering free replacement cables to consumers that have reported an issue via customer service.

By Siriam TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Amazon Verified Purchase
I had spent a lot of time looking at different Mac external hard drives and reviews on Amazon and Mac User magazine. This told me that many drives seemed to suffer from heat, noise or slow speeds. At the same time having read that less than 5% of users do any form of back up and with an increasing number of documents and photos stored on my Macs, I decided to make a start at the lower cost end and so bought this 1 TB Mac formatted Western Digital disc.

I used the item pretty well straight out of the box (no problems with the disc or the drive casing or build), installing both the installed software on the drive (the persistent desktop software icon that one reviewer refers to) and using the "Missing manual for Snow Leopard" book to install. I subsequently copied out of the software the English guide manual, which is strongly recommended as it has a lot of pictures and advice on usage and several tips.

First impressions were good but as stated by one reviewer the latest software update did seem to unbalance the machine with a need to reboot the Mac a few times to then make it work again properly but after that aspect all is now fine. Time Machine on Mac is a godsend and this drive works well with it but as only USB and not FireWire it is not super quick. However the item is very quiet and well ventilated and easily stored behind an I-mac screen so it works quietly in the background without any further attention needed.

On the persistent software icon issue mentioned, I removed this icon by "ejecting" it from the Appplications window and so far it has not reappeared or affected the drive's performance (there is a separate icon installed in the Dock to access the tabs and screens tools as needed). The one mistake I have learned not to make is to remove the "My Book" dmg icon which one would normally move to the Trash bin after the software has been installed under a Mac OS. For reasons I do not understand, every time I have done this it has disconnected the drive disc from working!

Overall this item does very well the basic job I bought it for but is not super fast so definitely a case of you get what you pay for.

UPDATE - I fear within a week of posting the above review the HD gave up the ghost and would not work at all! With no recognising of the external drive I ended up with all my external back up data trapped! I have thus with the great help of Amazon (who were brilliant on returning the item and then crediting my account) had tp strat looking for another external HD for myMac sadly.

This is my third WD product, I now have 2 External HD's and a Passport so I'm pretty familiar with their workings.

I purchased this 1TB HD so that I can run it alongside my 500GB iMac.

Very easy to set up I, partitioned the HD down the middle so that I can store most of my applications, documents and pictures on the External HD rather than my iMac. The other 50% of the external HD was used with the Time Machine to give me peace of mind.

It's really easy to use and runs very quietly in the background. There's no heat coming from it which is always good as I work in a very confined space. Best of all there is no lag time when retrieving documents and apps from the HD so I'm able to work just as efficiently as when I work straight from the Mac.

I don't bother use the Smartware for this product as I believe that updating it is a little annoying and not as straight forward as it could and should be.

Pro's:
Quick, quite and easy to install and partition

Con's:
Smartware is pointless.

BEWARE 1 Dec 2009
By Anna
I bought this Hard Drive for use with Snow Leopard and was going to partition it - one side for Time Machine and the other for personal use. The hard drive is not too big (about the same height as my hand) and is small enough to fit behind my iMac screen.

HOWEVER, after plugging it all in, a VCD (virtual CD) icon appears on screen and you can not get rid of it (v. v. annoying). Following Western Digital's advice on how to remove the VCD from the desktop, I was advised to download the new firmware. Now, whatever you do, DO NOT DO THIS. As soon as updating the firmware was complete, I plugged everything back in, but the Hard Drive does not show on my desktop, or in the Disk Utilities. I tried this on my MacBook Pro (using Leopard) and still, it wasn't being read. After calling up Western Digital (being told that I received a faulty drive) and getting another replacement from Amazon (who were very quick btw), I tried again with the new one. Again, the same thing happened. Either Amazon have got a faulty batch or the WD MyBook for Mac does not like to work properly with Snow Leopard...

Please be warned that if you do get this product, there WILL be an annoying VCD icon at the top of your screen, it WONT go away and if you try to get rid of it, the Hard Drive will probably not be read by your mac. I wish good luck to all those out there who decide to buy this product.
