Read good reviews about this so I bought it this year from Amazon.

Western Digital have an excellent reputation for building great hard drives, giving good customer care and service and unike Samsung, Western Digital allow you to send the drives directly back to them for repair or replacement if they go wrong with in the warranty period.

Hi
At 10 pence per gigabyte you can't really complain!

I have an existing Seagate drive that is beginning to make unnerving rattling sounds and so I have installed this Caviar drive and activated the backup software that comes free within the Vista control panel to do a daily update copy of all my files.

When the Seagate does finally fall of its perch I will set up a pair of 500GB drives in a Raid 1 configuration but the thought of doing this now and having to re-install all my software before I really have to is just too much!

The Caviar drive installed easily, runs quietly and, so far, "does exactly what it says on the tin." Time will tell!

Swapped out an 80GB Seagate Barracuda for this Western Digital 500GB baby.

Easy enough to install: Acronis True Image, straight swap, restore the disk image and resize the disk partitions (using EASEUS Home Partition Manager - a free utility).

I don't think it's quite as quiet as the one its replaced but it's not quite Whisper Quiet. That said it's nothing like as bad as a Maxtor I had in a Dell which sounded like someone rattling a bag of marbles.

Being OEM you just get the drive, no cables, no jumpers, no instructions (though you can find them on the WD website itself under Support). It doesn't have a "legacy power connector" something which worried me but turned out to be OK as the power comes via the SATA connection.

Longevity? Reliability? Dunno. Only been in my PC 3 hours so far. But a previous WD Caviar lasted just under 10 years so I'll be optimistic on that one.

I bought this to replace an 120Gb Samsung drive on a home theatre PC and at this price it was a no-brainer to upgrade to a larger drive.

For the past six years I've always built my own computers, so fitting a new drive wasn't a new experience. The only issue a ran into was Vista while detecting the drive in the device manager wasn't displaying the unformatted drive in 'Computer' or 'Computer Management > Storage > Disc Management'. I quickly solved the problem by just formatting the drive in Acronis. If you run into the same problem you could also use EASEUS Partition Master to format the drive which is freeware, just Google it and it's easy to find.

It's worth remembering this is an OEM package, so you'll not get any screws, Sata cable, conversion/cloning software or instructions. If you need any of those things you might be better off opting for a 'retail' packaged drive and if you need any instructions or documentation you can find them easily on the Western Digital support site.

The drive itself is very quiet, not silent but barely audible in a silent room and even when transferring large files or multiple files drive noise is barely noticeable. As I fitted mine in a HTPC once the TV was on you can't hear any PC related noise anyway.
In my setup running two Akasa Apache 120mm silent fans the temperature of this drive was around 30c when idle and didn't peak higher than 33c even when under load.

Overall, if you're looking for a good brand name 500Gb drive at a decent price then this is a very good buy.

I chose this 500GB hard disk to use as additional storeage on a Windows 9x system (specifically, Windows ME). I bought the disk from Kikatek, who supplied it properly packed, in a standard protective foam-lined cardboard shipping box; and it arrived undamaged.

I've connected the disk to a StarTech PCI card, which has a 48-bit LBA controller (a VIA VT6421 chip) that provides the necessary support for a hard disk larger than 137GB. And with the driver files for Windows 98 installed, which are supplied with that PCI card, the hard disk is recognised at its full capacity in Windows.

As the PCI card is SATA-I and this is a SATA-II hard disk, I had to set the disk hardware to SATA-I: using a mini jumper pin to force the hard disk to emulate a SATA-I disk (i.e. to run at SATA-I speed), by jumpering pins 5 and 6 on the disk. I had to buy separately a 2.54mm mini jumper pin (from Psylins Computer, in their CMP-SCREWKIT10).

A SATA disk is the safest choice on a Windows 9x system, as the motherboard has no SATA ports. Thus there is no way this disk could ever be accidentally connected to the motherboard, which doesn't support disks exceeding 137GB.

That PCI card is compatible with an older (year 2000) model PC, as it uses PCI 2.2 and provides driver files for Windows 9x; and it provides scope for future expansion, as the e-SATA port will accept external SATA devices.

For now, I'm only using the internal SATA port, to make use of my one free 5.25 inch drive bay, in which I've installed a StarTech.
