Manufacturer's Description

Pack up your office files and take them home. Carry thousands of songs or pictures. These drives are simple to use, light and easy to carry, and require no power adapter - they are powered directly through the USB cable.

Installation is a snap because you don't really "install" this drive; you just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in. Powered by the USB bus, so no separate power supply needed.

This ultra-portable drive fits easily in your pocket or purse, weighs only a few ounces and holds tons of valuable data.

I have been a fan of Western Digital Hard Drives for a long time, and this portable offering certainly helps to reinforce my trust in this manufacturer. As a consultant I am regularly travelling between client sites and need a portable storage device that can hold large amounts of data; for virtual PC images, source code and ISO images of CD's and DVD's. The WD passport drive is bus powered so I don't need to lug a power supply with it; and it will fit comfortably in a shirt pocket.

The drive speed is not as fast as an internal drive so running applications from it would not be advisable, but as a storage device it is perfect. Because it relies on bus power the length of USB cable is critical, the shorter the better, so don't lose the provided cable.

This would be a really superb little drive if it wasn't for the problem with USB power (as mentioned by lots of other reviewers). I got it for use between an iMac and a Powerbook and it WILL NOT WORK with the Powerbook, which does not provide enough power, even when plugged into the mains.

The dual USB cable that is required for extra power is not readily available, and the third-party ones that I've seen have had only had two very short cables - useless for my Powerbook, which has its USB ports on either side!

On the other hand if you want to use it to attach to a desktop machine exclusively, it's fine; it looks terrific, it's very small and light and the price is good.

I received this last week, took it out of its box, plugged it into a USB socket and there it was - 250gb additional storage for my PC. I can't imagine how many digital photos that represents, but probably by the time it fills up, we'll be using some other undreamed of devices anyway.

This is a perfect piece of kit for back-up of anything, video, photos, music or just about anything digital. Its so big you're in all reality unlikely to ever need anything with more capacity. Its very compact and light and you can carry it around in your pocket and plug it in to any PC you want to use.

It comes with synchronization software so you can automatically update it with files from specific folders, but I personally don't use that preferring to use other back-up software (or just good old Windows Explorer. I've only used it with Windows XP, but it says on its MAC compatible.

Some external disks need their own power supply - this one doesn't, but if you're using a USB hub (USB extension sockets!), you may need to use one that's powered. No problems if its plugged right into the PC though.

Brilliant value which will let you sleep at night knowing your data is safe.

Good Product
Great little handy drive for anyone. Would like a case though as it does scratch easily. However Western is always a good buy for me.

Unreliable
Like a few other reviews I've just read, this product worked fine for roughly a year before it packed in. Like others, I've only used it lightly, and all was fine. Read more

Not too bad...
This hard drive is very easy to install, and is very portable. For the size of it, it's capacity really amazing. However, when it comes to reliability it is not so good. Read more

Very quiet drive!
I bought this for use with an NSLU2 network storage link. It runs fine from USB power, reducing cable tangle. Most importantly, it is virtually silent. Read more
