Product Description

In 1944, the Crown Film Unit set out to document the bravery of Britain s Merchant Seamen and to expose the terrible danger they faced on the Atlantic Convoys. Unusually for the time, colour film was used throughout. The result is generally regarded as one of the best British documentaries of the war.

Great film 8 Oct 2009
Format:DVD
This has to be one of the best films of the Second World War, made on a shoe-string with non-professional actors and a documentary style and wholly imbued with authenticity. See it straight through and then again with the director's voice-over. Hats off too to the 30,000 plus merchant seamen who died on those convoys.

A National Treasure 19 Feb 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
To me this is one of the finest films ever made, some years ago i tried to find out more about the men who acted in the film, not professional actors but veterans of the Merchant service and Royal Navy, one of them a veteran of Jutland,i had no luck, although it is possible some of the younger members of the cast could still be with us.Along comes this dvd complete with a fascinating commentary by Dr Toby Haggith and Pat Jackson who Directed the film-pure gold,i would have paid the purchase price for this alone,it answers a lot of questions i for one would ask,and is very moving to listen to,i wont spoil it but keep in mind these men were ears deep in a horrible war which at the time the film was shot still had some time to run.A film that is a genuine national treasure about national treasures containing footage shot on passage with a wartime convoy,a convoy that lost ships to u boat attack, all shot in colour at no little risk to those involved.

this is a classic piece of film for its use of real merchant navy men, including my grandfather. It pays tribute to the brave men of the merchant navy
