This compilation proves that just as there was more to Detroit than The Supremes and Motown, there was more to Westbound than those hard driving acid funk groups (Though if you dig that, check out the Westbound Gettin' It Off Compilation !)
What you hear on this fantastic CD is the sweet soul side of Westbound... Fans of those early '70s vocal groups like The O'Jays, The Moments, The Whispers, The New Birth will definitely dig these cuts from deep down in the vaults and like a lot of those groups no matter how mellow the grooves are, they'll always have a nice rhythmic edge to them (just don't let me catch you standing in front of the bedroom mirror practising your moves and steps.)
There are a few extra points by the way that make this CD an extra bang for the buck - - plenty of unissued sides (Detroit Emerald fans take note ! ! ! ), a very different side of The Counts, or atleast one more similar to the sound they'd revive on their Awareness cuts (check out the mega-funky What's Up Front That Counts CD !) the original version of the tune made famous by Ripple and a few hip hop groups "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky - - finally this CD has over 25 tracks... and all of 'em are good.
Hmmmmmm... somewhat off the subject... wonder if Amazon has any Carl Douglas reissues ? (This came to mind while listening to the flute part on the Fantastic Four's I'm Falling In Love.)
