Product Description

CD Description

* The Northern soul side of the legendary Detroit indie label has never been fully explored. Westbound had a lot of great dance record releases which have been largely overlooked due to the funky nature of the successful acts like Ohio Players and Funkadelic.

* There are more great harmony groups to complement the Westbound Sound Of Detroit CD (CDSEWD 065) that was issued in 1994. In fact there are only five tracks duplicated from that CD.

* More top quality unreleased sides have been unearthed by major soul acts including the excellent `Ain't That Lovin'' by Denise LaSalle & Abe Tilmon from the Detroit Emeralds as well as an unheard recording `I'm Slowly Moulding' by the Magictones.

* Cult Detroit vocalists Joe Matthews, Emanuel Lasky and Eddie Hill are all represented and there are further vocal group gems from Unique Blend, the Superlatives and the Houston Outlaws. Half of the CD is new to digital and only one of the tracks has featured on a Kent CD before.

* `Maybe So, Maybe No' by the New Holidays is the original of the song that Mayer Hawthorne had a recent (new) R&B smash with. It is full of great soul surprises, many of them very rare on vinyl, and is the highest quality late 60s, early 70s crossover soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Funky!!, 6 Feb 2010

Never written a review before but I couldn't let this superb album sit with a one star rating. As with most Kent releases this is quality - music, reproduction and liner notes. In my opinion worth buying for the Fantastic Four track alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOW CAN ANYONE CALL THIS FUNKY? - ON THE OTHER HAND I SEE WHY, 6 May 2010
By
This review is from: Westbound Detroit Northern Soul (Audio CD)
Almost all the tracks are from late 60s to early 70s. There are like 2 tracks, one from the mid-70s and another from the late-70s that has slap bass, but basically all of this is in the early Motown, soulful style. However, upon further listening, I do hear a lot of that 4-on-the floor rhythm of the later style, whereas the early style of soul had more complicated rhythms and bass lines. But I like this a lot. It fits in well with ones other northern soul, Motown, etc. A couple of stand-out tracks that deserve classic status are "What Every Little Girl Needs" and "Ain't No Telling." It makes a nice companion to the super-funky Getting It Off, too. This is soul for sure. If you want one that has a questionable title, check out Searching For Soul. Now that is really mislabeld. It is heavy funk and really great, too. - (later) - I've been checking out other stuff called "Northern soul" and this CD surpasses all in production, song writing, and musical sophistication. Most, if not all, of it is far advanced to other Northern soul. I even wonder if this should be called 'Northern Soul,' as to me that category implies records that were saved from obscurity by British collectors and tend to be less commercial than this collection which is more polished and silky in production. This CD gets better with every listen. One of the all-time great soul compilations. The other Westbound releases are great, too. The other few real greats I've heard are Sound Of Sidra and Groovesville on Outta Sight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Believe the Reviews..., 24 Feb 2010
By
This review is from: Westbound Detroit Northern Soul (Audio CD)
I happen to like this CD because it features some excellent music. I love Damon Shawn's version of Feel the Need in Me (Detroit Emeralds' version is still the definitive take) and the New Holidays' Maybe So Maybe No. (I had heard Mayer Hawthorne's cover but didn't know of the original)
However, I do think judging this CD purely because it doesn't correspond to somebody's definition of northern soul is unfair. It's like somebody saying they don't like Shakespeare because the language is a bit odd. Or it's like a wine snob comparing a bottle of Lambrini with a fine bottle of Bordeaux. These comparisons simply don't work. They don't work because they don't acknowledge the fact that people can always find worth in things. Shakespeare fans love him because his plays deal with universal themes. Lambrini fans love it because they love to get gassed quickly. With regard to this comp, dismissing it simply because it's funky soul is far from constructive.
I think it's a lot fairer to compare this comp against other 70s soul CDs. I think it's interesting to see whether the tracks on Westbound Northern soul compare against established modern soul tunes. Are they as good as yer Gloria Scotts, yer Luthers and so on? Or is this CD proof that there's no great records left to be 'discovered' by the northern soul crowd? Is it proof that Kent are scraping the bottom of the the barrel with Westbound northern soul? I think it's easier to engage with a review which addresses these arguments.
Also, these reviewers have made great play of their knowledge of northern soul. If they know so much about this genre, surely they would have known that the likes of Funkadelic would have made records which sound very different to hardy perennials like the Snake?
For the record, I spent a very enjoyable hour and a half with it. I wouldn't normally have given this a five star review. But I've given five stars in an attempt to restore some balance.
