Indispensible!, 29 Nov 2009
This review is from: West Highland Way XT40 (Route Map) (Paperback)
The West Highland Way in winter with bad weather can be quite an endurance test. I was well prepared this November with several maps and guides as well as a tent and cooking stove.
Out of all my preparatory purchases this map was the best. A great design, with the path covered in several vertical strips makes it very practical to use. One of the most irritating problems with OS maps occurs when you are walking near the edge or a fold in the map: this is immediately solved by Harveys' KT40 map. Even better it is in a light-weight polyethylene material which means that the inevitable Scotch mist (rain) does not make it soggy and liable to disintegrate.
The scale is a useful 1:40000, with some large scale street maps of key points in the walk. For the whole walk there is a 3km strip showing detail on either side of the path. This broadens out in a couple of areas so side trips up Ben Lomond or some of the hills in the Ben Nevis area are covered.
For me, after waterproofness, the next best feature is the km and mile counters which allows at a glance to recognise how far / how long to the next milestone.
There is a good range of features highlighted like campsights, toilets, accomodation and descriptive text anf general and safety information is included in Enlgish, French, German. There is a warning that some symbols may be slightly out-of-place, which I found to be true in one instance. And despite the special design it is superimposed with the (OS) national grid so it is easy to use with GPS (although a GPS is hardly necessary on this route with this map).
Needless to say if you want to use the OS equivalent you have to choose between 1:25000 (too big) and 1:50000 (too small) and buy more than a kilo in weight of maps.
Indispensible!

All you need!, 30 Jun 2010
This review is from: West Highland Way XT40 (Route Map) (Paperback)
I ran in the West Highland Way Race in June 2010. It is a race along the whole WHW in one go.
The map is compact, waterproof and the level of detail is good. The route is broken up into strips to fit it onto the sheet: each strip has adequate coverage of each side of the route to allow for detours (or getting lost), and there is an overlap between the end of each one and the beginning of the next. These features made the Harvey map an indispensable 'companion' on my WHW Race and vastly superior to the Ordnance Survey alternatives.
