5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensable guide, 17 Dec 2006

If you're considering chartering a yacht out of Athens or elsewhere in the West Aegean, chances are you'll find this book on board your boat. It's the standard sailing guide to the area and everyone uses it. Expanded from that section of Heikell's Greek Waters Pilot, this book is a joy to read, with evocative colour photos, clear coloured diagrams of harbours and anchorages, lots of interesting historical and cultural information and advice on where to go (and where to avoid)). Buy it before you go - you'll get a huge amount of pleasure in planning your itinerary and, if you are so minded, you'll be intrigued by some of the out of the way places he describes that the charter people don't usually mention. I never would have sailed into the tiny little port of Vathi (the one near Methana)if it wasn't for the beautiful photographs and the diagram in this book, and there is surely no more delightful place in Greece.

A couple of minor points - the information is a little out of date in some places, only to be expected since the book was printed in 2002. A lot has happened before and after the Olympics around Athens. And for those chartering out of Kalamaki, nowadays it isn't quite the scary place Heikell describes (but the nightclub will still keep you awake all night). It's also a pity that there's not a little more on wind and weather outside the summer high season. But these are minor quibbles. The information in the book is detailed and excellent in all repects. With this book, you'll plan with pleasure and sail with confidence.

Just chartered a yacht from Athens and sailed to Aigina, Poros and Hydra.
Rod Heikell's pilot books are excellent.
