The Company

Westermann & Co. was founded in 1867 as a family enterprise based in the Sauerland and celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2007

The brand Wesco stands for metal manufacturing in the classical manner – a combination of excellent German quality, an exclusive design and high tech functionality. A long experience in manufacturing and high tech form a perfect unity giving Wesco products their unique design

Soon after its establishment in 1867, the company specialised in the processing of metal plates for household goods and has since continuously extended the range of its products.

In the 1920s, Wesco introduced the “ash can” into its product range, after the war it launched its first “pedal bin”. Today, the range of household goods includes more than 50 waste bins in various designs. Some of these products are modelled on the historic precursors which have inspired the use of classic design elements in the development of modern products.

Wesco design is characterised by the company's long-standing experience with metal as working material. Because we are familiar with the material we work with, we are able to shape it in a new and exciting way.

DESIGN AND TRADITION

In the USA - the land of unlimited possibilities and unfortunately of unlimited volumes of trash as well - trash containers in the typical American dimensions of 50 litres and more have been in production since the 1920s. These bins were originally developed for the catering trade, but soon found their way into American households.

But it was not until the 1970s that the American 'trash can' celebrated its triumphal as symbol of the typically American design. This feat was achieved with the help of a German exchange student in the US: Egbert Neuhaus, the current managing director of Wesco. During his stay in Texas, one of these typically American trash cans caught his eye - and it was 'love at first sight'. Neuhaus brought the product idea back to Germany with him to his father's factory.

Due to long years of experience in metal processing the Wesco-team brought the necessary expertise to the table for re-designing the American 'trash can'.

Based on the American idea of 'large volume large input flap', the body and the semicircular lid of the trash bin were adapted to each other in such a way that the proportions were perfectly well suited to one another, and topped off by a large, technically solid input flap made of stainless steel and stable handles.

Further technical details were added. Now the only thing missing was a new name: based on the writing engraved on the flap, it was christened 'Pushboy' - the first child of an entire family which today comprises more than 20 design products.

ORIGINAL QUALITY - MADE IN GERMANY

Modern technology and finest materials guarantee the quality and longevity of Wesco products: high-quality powder-coated or galvanized sheet-steel and stainless steel are being used. Stainless steel is known for its durability and rust resistance.

The company strategy regarding functionality is based on a combination of high-tech and tradition: Projects designed at the computer are undergoing extensive test phases for function and sturdiness, before starting with high-technology production.

Decades of experience in craftsmanship take care of the final touch.

Product Description

This stunning sculptural piece is the Wesco Classic Whistling Kettle.  With obvious Art Deco influences this retro kettle is a great way of introducing a bit of stylish nostalgia and an authentic feel to your kitchen. It’s been years since we last heard a kettle whistling away on the stove signalling immanent beverage time, so the first thing we did upon arrival of these items was purchase one for our own kitchen here…and we love it!  The unique shape, combination of stainless steel and bright red silicone, and intricate detailing all make the Wesco Classic Kettle an absolute…well, classic! The lid and spout remain tightly closed when you place this kettle on the hob ensuring a rapid boiling time, and the silicone sections perfectly insulate you from the heat.  A flick-switch positioned on the handle allows easy pouring.Wesco Classic Whistling Hob Kettle Red Specifications: Materials: Stainless steel, silicone Dimensions: Height 23cm x diameter 23cm Capacity: 2ltr Suitable for all hobs Made in Germany 10 Year Guarantee

I wanted a whistling kettle that had style and worked well. My Wesco red kettle does just that. It looks impressive and boils water very quickly, everything you could ask for in fact. The silicon handle makes pouring safe and comfortable and the wide base makes good use of the gas burner. My only criticism is the mechanism for opening the spout can catch the unwary finger if you aren't careful...and that can hurt. Overall I would recommend the Wesco kettle if you want one that is a bit different.

Lovely 1 Jun 2009
By SteveZ
I bought this kettle - after a long search - for my old mother. She refuses to use an electric kettle & boils water for her tea in a little pan on the stove. Sometimes she forgets the pan is boiling & so it boils dry - I figured its only a matter of time before she burns the house down. Hence the whistling kettle.
My review applies to this purpose.
Good:
- Looks lovely!
- Whistle is very homely sounding & loud enough without being piercing.
- The whistle cannot be left off by mistake - the lever to open it is spring-loaded & shuts when you take your finger off it. (Most other stove-top models either have a removable whistle or one which can stick open.)
Not so good:
- Its big - not ideal for making just one or two cuppas. But to be fair I looked everywhere & couldn't find a small kettle that was fit for my purpose.
- Its quite heavy.
- The spout is positioned so that you really have to tilt the thing at a massive angle to get all the water out - which is quite awkward. Again not ideal if there wasn't much water in there to start with - ie just 1 or 2 mugs worth.
- The spout is quite small so just a little tricky to fill via the spout from the tap. However you can of course remove the main lid & use that to fill up.

I give it 5 stars as its the best I came across for my purpose.

Whilst writing this review - it strikes me that the issue of having a small kettle just to make 1 or 2 cups of tea/coffee - is also very relevant to energy conservation.

As good as it looks 29 May 2010
Totally happy with it. If there is one tiny criticism it's that pouring the very last bit out is tricky. The whistle is loud enough I hear it in the garden; the trigger to open the spout is the best I've used (of two or three). Actually I have a camping kettle that is pretty good that way.

And if you like the looks it looks better for real than the pictures.

Wesco - Classic Line 2.0Lt Stovetop Kettle - Red
The lid covering the main opening in which you pour water to boil is hard to get off. The spout lid does not make for a full pour. It looks great, seems sturdy. Delivered on time.

Steam back again
This kettle is cheaper than an electric one to use. Gas is one third the cost of electric and altough it takes slightly longer to boil it's worth using if you have the time.
