A good cross-section,

This review is from: The Werewolf Pack (Wordsworth Mystery & Supernatural) (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) (Paperback)
This book contains a good selection of werewolf stories from the early Victorian to the present day. Some of the older material is a little hard going, but it's more than made up for by the rest, which include some really excellent tales. Well worth the price.

Not quite what I expected,

This review is from: The Werewolf Pack (Wordsworth Mystery & Supernatural) (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) (Paperback)
As the title suggests this book didn't dovetail with my expectations, but then it never really could have done given that the 21st century conception of a werewolf is quite different to that of the 19th and early 20th.
Variety is the key to a good anthology and The Werewolf Pack succeeds in this regard withan interesting mixture here both in terms of story and werewolf type. I would agree that The Clay Party is perhaps the pick of the bunch, though Among The Wolves and Gabriel-Ernest run it close. As a slight warning to potential readers I would say that the writing styles, although distinct and different, are very much of their time in so far as they can be quite long-winded with the prose also being far more complex than we often see today. If you've ever read a classic novel from the 19th century and not enjoyed it because of the style then you may want to consider giving this collection a miss. But, to do so would mean missing out on what is both an enjoyable and informative read. Significantly more hits than misses and an instructive glimpse into both the old mythology of and the evolution of the fiction surrounding werewolves. Excellent value for money. Score: 7/10

Where are the werewolves?,
This review is from: The Werewolf Pack (Wordsworth Mystery & Supernatural) (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) (Paperback)
I was really disappointed by this. A few good tales, but alot of them have little actual werewolf content, and some of those have little or no supernatural content even!
My favourites would have to be The Clay Party; a chilling story set in the Old American west and The undying Thing. My least favourite was Loup Garou... just awful. Overall, not bad, especially for the price. But I did feel a little cheated.
